Unfortunately, there's more. I tried translating as much as I could, but I think a second or third opinion would be good.



145. 新潮の昔の文庫とかすんごいですね、あれ
新潮の昔の文庫=the collection from Shinchou from before (?)
すんごい=possibly すごい slurred?

155. 紙が悪いっつうのだったらもう
I'm not sure about the conjugation of that adjective.

163. 昔の人はそれだけ読書が好きだったんだよなあ、と
'People in the past only liked to read that' (?)

166. 岩波のおっきい
おっきい=? (size? largeness?)

167. 昔なんてだって三段組とかあった
三段組=??? (no idea)

172. 前はたいてい、電車の行き帰りとー
たいてい=??

174. てゆうかやっぱりー、あれだよ、書いてあることが専門分化してきてるってゆうことでさあ、ぱっと読んで分かんないでしょ
'As expected, it’s more like that, you know, the stuff that’s written that’s become specialized, you jump around while reading it and you can’t understand it, like that' (?)

立ち読み --> am I translating this right?


Shoot, after classes end today, I'm locking myself back in my apartment to finish up all these final projects. Project + two essays due tomorrow...and this thing needs to be analzyed by Wednesday. I can do it!! (I hope...)

in the publishing context, the 3-rows-of-paragraphs-in-a-page format comonly seen on newspaper/magazines is called 三段組 (it can also mean "3rd level group, but I doubt that's what they're talking about here)

大抵, generally. "before, I generally [context... read?] while heading back on the train"

斜め読み also means skimming/speed reading (I've been told that skimming/speed reading/斜め読み are all different methods, but doubt it matters in the context. you just... read, very quickly...)
i.e. things with lots of kanji are easier to skimm read

No idea what it's called in English, (in Cantonese it's 打書釘 xD )... but it means when people read books inside a bookstore (without buying it)

Ah, now that makes a lot more sense! I couldn't figure out what 三段組 meant. And the 立ち読み part...haha, well, now I know why they're making such a big fuss over it near the end of the conversation. XD;; Hm, I don't think there's an English term for that.

The それだけ here has a different meaning from the usual 'only', it can also mean 'that much' (rough translation). So 'People in the past liked reading that much'. Change the words around if it sounds weird. XD;

166. 岩波のおっきい
おっきい=large, big. It's 大きい, slangified (?).

174. てゆうかやっぱりー、あれだよ、書いてあることが専門分化してきてるってゆうことでさあ、ぱっと読んで分かんないでしょ
Me translates: 'Actually, all in all, it's like, the stuff that's written is becoming too specialized, and you can't understand it after reading through it once, can you?' ぱっと is like 'abruptly' or 'immediately', or something like that.

175. それとやっぱーあれだよね、あの、漢字が多い方がさあ、斜め読みには適してるんだよね
Me translates: 'Plus, it's, you know, better adapted to giving it a once-over if there's more kanji'

182. ひらがなだとやっぱりね、追うんだよね、どうしてもぱっとつかめない
Me translates: 'Hiragana just, you know, makes you just follow it, and you can't get the gist easily.' I translated ぱっと easily here, I don't know if it's proper... 追うんだよね is used for sentences like following the words. It's just hard to put it into the whole sentence.

199. ちがうよー、そのくらい読めるもんだったら、それで読んでこれちゃうよ
ちゃう is talk-speak or, you know, slangish/slurred japanese that usually confuses foreigners much like じゃん and others. Simplified japanese would make it 読んでこれてしまうよ, I assume.

200. 郡司、て書いといてさあ、これを誰も動かすなって
I have a feeling your translation is off. Can I have the whole sentence?

I've found out that 文庫 (from the last post), at least in this conversation, refers to a type of novel, like...paperback, or something like that. Do you ever use that word? Somehow, in all the dictionaries I've checked, it always appears as book collection or library.

For 200 and 201, I've actually already included the entire sentence. It follows what was said in 199, though 199 is a different speaker. The speaker for 200 and 201 are the same.

Well, it goes:

It's all very random conversation, but the words in the parenthesis indicates that they're probably talking about bookmarks at one point? I don't really know what 島田 is talking about.

I've finished all of the stuff that's due today. This analysis is due tomorrow. It's another all-nighter for me!! But at least summer vacation is just around the corner~!!

Oh, I came upon another part where I'm a little iffy on the meaning.

110. 船戸与一も、ほんとは他に読まなきゃいけないのがいっぱいあるのに、つい逃げる

逃げる normally means running away, but it's not used in that sense here, is it?
