I'm considering signing up for
yuletide this year. I first started participating in 2006 as a pinch hitter (I believe this was the fic, and I've participated every year since then until 2013. I didn't participate in 2014 because of traveling to Japan during December, and then I skipped 2015 as well. Would be lovely to participate again (and exercise my oneshot writing muscles). :) I made a list of what I might request and offer, but I'll have to give it some more thought.
Recently, I've been playing Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice. Bought it the day after it was released. It's awesome to see all the characters again, and I love that we're getting more about Apollo. I was hoping Dual Destinies would cover his background more, but it didn't, really. SoJ seems to remedy that. Whether I'll like his new background remains to be seen, but at least we're getting it!
I wouldn't mind if Phoenix wasn't in the game, haha. Whenever I'm faced with Phoenix's sections, I find myself wanting the game to head back to Apollo. :') So, I am pleasantly surprised that Apollo does indeed have quite the focus in this game.
Case 1
One of the more interesting 1st cases, I feel! Phoenix is quite the experienced attorney now, so instead of getting told how things work, he asks the judge if he needs a refresher. XD I found it funny when Phoenix told the bailiff that he was a lawyer, and while the bailiff was still confused, Phoenix made a run for the courtroom. What an entrance. The seance scenes feel harder to solve than Athena's mood matrix, but I feel I have the hang of them now. Payne has leveled up since his last appearance, man.
Case 2
I was really amazed by Trucy. She's gotten so popular! I feel proud. She's even able to hold such a large show now instead of only performing at a shady club. I'm also glad that the game is giving her some focus. Mr. Reus does seem to have come out of nowhere for the Gramaryes, but I don't mind. I only wish he had gotten a speaking part.
After watching the anime, which refreshed my memories of the first 2 games, it really drove home how many entertainers are involved in the Ace Attorney franchise. There are the circus people, the Steel Samurai, the Nickel Samurai, the Gavinners, and the Gramaryes. (There are also the rakugo actors from Case 4 too). Ace Attorney sure loves its entertainers.
I loved playing as Apollo. He then threw a bone at us right before the ending about Nahyuta. I flailed HARD. APOLLO, WHY. I won't find out what you're talking about until waaaay later, right??? Ugh, all the waiting. ): Can I just skip to finding out already...
As for Ema, wow. She's so much happier in this game than in AJ. I almost thought the snackoos were gone for good, but they do appear. XD; I'm glad for her too, that she was able to pass her forensic exam and do what she always wanted. Though the fingerprint investigations parts of this game are frustrating. Why, Ema, why must you torture me so. Still, it's good to have her back. She's oddly deferential to Nahyuta though, when she was completely the opposite with Klavier.
Case 3
Nahyuta, how did you get to Khura'in so quickly?! I thought Phoenix Wright couldn't make it to Trucy's trial because he was too far away in the Kingdom of Khura'in, but based on how quickly Nahyuta made his way over to Khura'in, shouldn't Phoenix have been able to make it back for Trucy? Even if it's not right away, at least he should try... It's his daughter!
I'm not overly fond of Rayfa or Nahyuta. I'm mostly still more interested in the returning characters. It's great to finally see Maya again. Though... Maya, the defendant, again? Things sure never change. This was an interesting case, and ultimately, kind of sad, but I was just itching to return to Apollo's side of the story the entire time. :')
The case lasted 2 days. I thought we'd get a 3 day trial, but nope. The only reason it even went to day 2 was because of the 2nd victim found. That was certainly a new way of prolonging the trial!
So, spirit channeling requires a face and the person's true name? XDDDD Made me think of Death Note, hahahaha.
It was great seeing spirit channeling used to channel a spirit as a witness though! Since they are in Khura'in, this is easily acceptable as something that can be trusted as testimony. It sure wouldn't fly elsewhere, huh? Clever use of spirit channeling here. :D
Case 4
Again, Nahyuta, how did you get back here so quickly?? Don't you have jetlag doing that?
Interestingly enough, we get an Athena case here. It feels completely unrelated to the rest of the game, with only a slight connection through the shared theme of succession. It's also heavy with Japanese culture. Rakugo, soba, udon!! I see it didn't become burgers or pizza. XD
I came in knowing it would be a one day case, but man was the case short. It would have been nice to have an investigation segment, and I wish Bucky at least took the stand himself and gave testimony. He wasn't even there much. (Why should we even defend him...)
Athena sure felt very inexperienced, especially compared to Phoenix and Apollo, but hey if that inexperience means we can have Blackquill as the defense co-counsel, sign me up! XD; It was great getting new sprites for Blackquill because of it, and the dialogue was awesome. (*snickers* Prosecutor Sad Monk. That's an awesome name)
Athena's double desk slams are great.
I'm on court session day 1 of case 5 now. Can't wait to see how this all unfolds.
