In the blink of an eye, several years have passed since I wrote summaries for 39. In the meantime, I actually finished translating 39 volume 1 but never finished writing the summaries. Now that the translations of these chapters are being posted at Prince Revolution!, summaries probably aren’t needed anymore. :’D

I had finished the summary of Chapter 4 Part/Section 1, so I guess I’ll post it here. I have just posted the actual translation of the chapter over at Prince Revolution. So, feel free to go over there to read the chapter and then come back to read my thoughts/summary if you’re interested. Don’t know if there’s any interest for summaries/thoughts of the rest of the chapters since translations will be up soon anyway.

Yu Wo has yet to release 39 volume 2 (4 year wait ahhhh), but I hope it’ll happen this year. She’s been working on it and posting teasers, so it might actually happen soon. So far, the teasers are about Elaro and a bandit group. Adair’s involved as well. ;)

Past summaries can be found through this tag.

Chapter 4: Teacher’s

Section 1: True Love

After his “dream,” Elaro rushes off to seek Adair, who opens his door sleepily. Adair currently shares a room with Ed because the Holy Temple has gotten crowded after the Church’s successful crusade against the Demon King. Many people have joined the Church, the most within the past fifty years. The Twelve Holy Knights-in-training are all sharing rooms too, except for Elaro because Neo had given Grisia his own room for Grisia’s convenience in applying facial masks. Grisia followed the same convention for his student.

Adair asks if Ed has fallen asleep. Ed answers, “...I’m asleep.” Then, Elaro tells Adair about his dream and his deductions that his teacher used telepathy to speak with him. Adair then deduces that the undead creatures from the day must have been sent by Knight-Captain Hell himself as a warning since he probably didn’t have much other choice.

Adair decides to head over to where the knight-captains are to check out the situation. He planned on leaving the next day, but since things are dire, he’ll seek out Vidar and head over right away with him even though it’s the middle of the night. Adair instructs Elaro to contact “the people” he needs to contact.

Elaro wants to wait and see what happens, but Adair replies that it’s better to waste their efforts than to allow anything to happen. He feels that Elaro lacks decisiveness. Elaro replies that he is just worried he will cause everyone more trouble.

Adair finds it funny and asks Elaro if he thinks Captain has never done anything wrong. Elaro can’t think of any such occurrence, but Adair then asks if Captain has ever asked Elaro to do something, and then there was no follow up. Although Elaro claims there must be a meaning behind his teacher’s requests, Adair tells Elaro that no matter how much he worships him, he isn’t the God of Light. He has his limits.

Elaro doesn’t want his teacher to reach his limit.

Adair has Ed bring him his sword. He commands Ed to lead the Sun Knight Platoon while he is away, and if anything happens, to listen to Elaro’s command. Then, Ed returns to being “asleep.” As Adair is about to leave, looking very calm, Elaro calls out to him and reminds him that he’s only wearing pajama pants.

The scene changes to a small house. Dawn has just broken, and Elaro is standing outside the house, unable to bring himself to knock on the front door. There’s a small garden filled with lavender flowers outside of the house, courtesy of Charsia. She is only twelve, but she’s an expert at managing the garden.

(The garden used to be overrun by weeds until a certain someone abused his power and ordered the holy knights under his command to get rid of the weeds.)

Eventually, the door opens by itself. Standing inside is Charlotte, who says she has been waiting for someone. Elaro knows the one she’s waiting for isn’t him. His teacher almost always drops by after a mission, and he would almost always bring Elaro with him because Charsia would want to play with him.

Auntie Charlotte has been living here for more than ten years. Even though she’s over forty, she looks closer to thirty. She tells him to come in before he catches a cold like his teacher often does. Elaro feels saddened because his teacher often falls sick now when he didn’t used to in the past.

Barely any trace of his teacher can be found in the house since he rarely visits.

Charlotte has Elaro sit down. She begins to cook breakfast. She loves cooking and is really good at it. The holy knights that weed the garden gradually begin voluntarily coming to weed it since she always cooks a delicious meal for them. They’re even disappointed when there aren’t any weeds.

Eventually, she opened a restaurant that operates by reservations. The restaurant only serves holy knights and clerics. None of them would dare dine and dash, since they would be killed by the leader of the Holy Temple if they did so.

Charsia pokes her head in. She has a head of blond hair and a pair of sky blue eyes. She complains that Elaro hasn’t visited in such a long time. As Elaro is apologizing, they suddenly hear a noise. Charlotte drops her tray. The trap Grisia set up to catch intruders has been set off.

Elaro draws his sword. He is skilled, (both Judgment Knight and Hell Knight have praised his swordsmanship), but he can’t hope to win against the Demon King. He stands protectively in front of Charlotte and Charsia. A figure rises from the window.

It’s Hungri, who is covered in dirt.

Hungri has followed Elaro over. He doesn’t know why Elaro is so frightened. There aren’t many people in Leaf Bud City who are a threat to Elaro.

Charlotte smoothes things over by inviting him inside. Elaro and Hungri clean up the broken dishes together. Charsia glares at Hungri and says she hadn’t been scared at all, and she won’t hand Big Bro Elaro over to Hungri or any other girl just because they’re closer in age!

Hungri rolls his eyes and complains that he’s a guy, and he’s said this countless times already. Charsia calls him a liar. He must be crossdressing in order to be the Judgment Knight. Everyone says so! Except for the uncle and auntie the street over who plant a lot of flowers.

Hungri reveals that they are his parents. Charsia answers that that must be why they are lying for him. They continue to bicker.

After they finish eating, Elaro helps clean up and tells Charlotte that she should leave with Charsia. Charlotte asks Elaro to save Grisia. Elaro promises her that he will do everything he can.

On the way back, Elaro asks Hungri why he followed him. Hungri denies it, saying that he was merely visiting Auntie Charlotte.

Hungri then questions why Knight-Captain Sun won’t marry Auntie Charlotte. They even already have a kid!

Elaro says that his teacher has his reasons. Hungri believes him. Otherwise, his teacher wouldn’t let it be. He then asks if this has anything to do with the current situation. Elaro’s expression immediately gives it away. He has grown afraid of Hungri’s interrogation skills.

“I really can’t tell you. But one day, I will definitely tell you and everyone else. Definitely!”

“... You really will? Okay, then I’ll wait for you to tell me.”

In a nutshell:
Elaro seeks Adair’s help. He tells Adair about his dream and how his teacher might have used telepathy. Adair deduces that the undead creature from the day must have been sent by Knight-Captain Hell as a warning. Seeing that the situation is dire, Adair decides to head over with Vidar right away. He tells Elaro to be more decisive and to seek out the “people” he needs to contact. The next morning, Elaro pays Auntie Charlotte a visit. She has been living in a small house in Leaf Bud City for over ten years now. She has a daughter with Grisia called “Charsia.” Charsia is twelve, loves to garden, and has golden hair, fair skin, and sky blue eyes. As Charlotte makes breakfast, Charsia complains to Elaro that it’s been too long since his last visit. Suddenly, they hear Grisia’s trap being set off, but it turns out to be Hungri, who followed Elaro. Hungri helps clean up the broken dishes that he caused. He bickers with Charsia, who accuses him to be a girl who is crossdressing to be the Judgment Knight. Afterward, Elaro tells Charlotte that she should leave with Charsia for their safety. He promises her that he will bring his teacher back. After they leave, Elaro questions Hungri why he followed him. Hungri denies it and then asks Elaro why Grisia hasn’t gotten married with Charlotte when they even have a kid already. Elaro says that his teacher has his reasons. Hungri correctly guesses that it’s related to the current situation. Elaro’s expression gives it away, but he only says that he can’t tell Hungri. However, one day, he definitely will. Hungri says he will wait.

Lucathia’s thoughts
This section is the bombshell of the entire book. Grisia has a daughter! He has a wife! Even though they’re not technically married, they’re pretty much husband and wife. How many people saw this coming? I didn’t... :’D; When I think of the Twelve Holy Knights, I always think of their students as their children. I thought 39 would continue in the same fashion, considering how Grisia took Elaro and Ludia under his wing. I’ve really enjoyed the bonds between teacher and student, how they’re like family even though they’re not related by blood.

When I first read 39, I felt cheated by this turn of events. Why have a character like Charsia when Grisia already has Ludia? When he already has Elaro? I felt it cheapened their relationship, and that it was unnecessary. Why have a character like Charlotte when Grisia’s bonds with his brothers are so deep? I felt cheated by that too because eh, I’ve always cared more about the bonds of comradeship than romantic bonds. All of a sudden, a majority of the focus is on Grisia trying not to harm Charlotte and Charsia, when it used to be all about Grisia trying not to harm his brothers. However, Grisia has always wanted to have a girlfriend, and he has always wanted a family. (I’ll complain forever about how he already has a family with the Twelve Holy Knights, but anyway, the more the merrier...?)

Given his character, however, this turn of events does make some sense. I’ve seen people complain that his relationship with Charlotte feels too abrupt, but eh, the signs were there in V8, even when those signs felt strange to me, and 39 is the 39th generation’s story, not their love story, so I don’t feel a need for their relationship to be described in detail in 39. I hope it won't be, actually. XD (Give me more of the 39 gen pls, and Adair.) All we have to know is that Grisia is together with Charlotte, and they have a kid. Grisia treasures all of his bonds, whether they are friendly bonds, familial bonds, or romantic bonds. Although he has always thought himself to be a selfish person, he is truly selfless, always loving those around him with his all. I’m glad he has found happiness despite his failing health... which is really worrying me. Please, Yu Wo! Hasn’t Grisia suffered enough already? (And please, don't pair Elaro with Charsia. Or Lesus with Charsia. I hope that never happens. I kind of dread it. XD)

Anyway, I adored the beginning scene between Adair and Elaro. Silly Adair. He almost went off in pajamas. He sure can be silly sometimes. Put on some clothes before you rush off to seek out your captain! =x Vidar totally would’ve been surprised, huh? I also found it cool to learn about the rooming situation at the Holy Temple. Do you think Earth has settled down yet? I wonder if he has settled down yet. Or if he ever plans to. Sun must’ve beat a bunch of them in having a kid. What a strange thought. XD Interaction between Elaro and Adair is always welcome in my books. Also, good to see Ed again too, even if it’s only for a bit. Adair admitting that his captain isn’t perfect is just, man. XD;;;
