In any other story, Nagihiko would have been the main character. He had been her best friend, the first person she'd thought to confide in. They baked together, they laughed together, they even had a sleepover together. He was the one who had approached Amu with the Guardian invitation. Not Hotori, not Souma, not Yaya.
Amu treated Nagihiko well enough, especially when she didn't remember that he wasn't Nadeshiko, which was ironic, because he was as much Nadeshiko as he was Nagihiko. When Amu spoke with him now, the topic almost always shifted to Nadeshiko. How's Nadeshiko? When's she coming back? I wish she were here. I wanted to ask her something. He always answered with half truths. He could give her no more than that. He didn't know how to tell her that Nadeshiko had never existed. There had only been him all along.
Of course, he was the main character of his own story, and with Rhythm's entry into his life, he knew he had lots to look forward to. He was as much a protagonist as anyone else, but neither Nadeshiko nor Nagihiko would ever be the main character in Amu's story.
