Title: so my captain shrank... now what? (9/9)

Summary: The vice-captains of the Twelve Holy Knights never thought that their duties would include looking after their deaged captains. They've really been missing out.
Notes: And that's a wrap! Thanks for joining me on this rambling journey. The final word count for this story is 12.5k. :) Because Tyler's captain does not shrink, I felt it would be strange to have that as a separate chapter, so I've included it here as a sort of ending after Lesus and Grisia's part. Enjoy!
Judgment and Sun
Vidar and Adair were lucky, or well, not so lucky, that their captains shrank around the same time. Vidar’s captain had shrunk first, to an estimated age of five. Knight-Captain Sun had personally brought him over for Vidar to look after when Knight-Captain Sun began shrinking right in front of Vidar’s eyes before he even finished explaining the situation, forcing yet another kid on Vidar.
Oh no, Vidar had thought. He certainly didn’t mind looking after his kid captain, but there was absolutely no way he could look after Adair’s captain at the same time! He could not imagine himself doing it and still coming out of it sane.
Adair’s captain blinked large blue eyes up at him. He was drowning in clothes that were now way too big on him. Despite the large, innocent eyes, Vidar broke into a cold sweat. He could not tell what was going on in that golden head. He quickly grabbed the child's hand with his right hand, as he was already holding onto his captain with his left.
Then, with two children in tow, he made a mad dash to the courtyard where he had last seen Adair. This was a state of utmost emergency!
Thankfully, Vidar easily found Adair. He immediately handed Knight-Captain Sun to him. To Adair’s credit, there was little shock on his face. He took it in stride (perhaps even delight?) when he saw just who it was that he now held by the hand. The golden-haired child peered up at this new person in curiosity.
“So it’s Captain’s turn?” Adair said with a smile and lifted the boy up into his arms in one smooth motion, to a delighted giggle. Adair asked him, “How old are you?”
The boy grinned a wide, toothy grin. He had several of his baby teeth missing in the front, leaving only his canines visible at a glance, almost making him look like a baby vampire. One, two, three, four fingers went up as he counted, and the boy proudly declared, "Whore!"
Vidar choked. Adair quickly freed one hand and gave Vidar a slap on the back to revive him.
Thankfully, Adair had always been an expert at translating his captain's speech, so much that he might as well be a mind reader. This time was no exception, even when his captain was a four-year old toddler who could not correctly pronounce his age because of his missing front teeth. (Then again, the four fingers that had gone up should have made him easy enough to understand for everyone). In a split second, Adair had already understood how that pronunciation had come about.
“Wow, four years old!” Adair praised, completely ignoring the mispronunciation. Little Grisia beamed, proud of his four years.
Their first task was fitting Knight-Captain Sun with a new outfit so that he could stop drowning in his clothes. Vidar’s captain was already clothed in an outfit of the correct size, and Vidar was embarrassed (but also proud) that it was one of the outfits that Vidar had provided for the dressing room after he had been briefed about the situation with the knight-captains. He had distantly understood that it meant that one of the knight-captains might end up wearing Vidar’s embarrassing childhood outfits, but never in his wildest imaginations had he ever entertained the thoughts of his captain wearing what Vidar had brought over. He just couldn't imagine it, not with his captain's stern demeanor and wide shoulders.
“Isn’t that one of yours?” Adair asked, gesturing at what Captain Judgment was wearing.
Vidar nodded, face heating up. Of all things, his captain had been dressed in the bunny cloak Vidar had stashed in the dressing room. The cloak had floppy bunny ears on the hood, complete with a fluffy tail on the cape, which would give the appearance of a tail once the cape settled behind the person wearing it. His captain was currently pulling on the hood, trying to wiggle it down more to cover more of his face, as if he could hide away from sight if his face were covered.
His captain was simply too cute for words! The bunny cloak suited him perfectly now that he was a tiny five year old.
While Vidar was lost among thoughts of his captain's cuteness, Adair let his four-year-old captain drag him around the dressing room. He sure was a demanding child. Rows upon rows of clothes met disapproval until they came across the section with Vidar's childhood clothes, which, if Vidar had been paying attention, he would have desperately tried to keep them away from. It was just so embarrassing. But alas, he was not paying attention, so mini Grisia happily ran to the clothes, picked up a cloak, and swung it around his shoulders.
"Meow!" he said as the cloak settled around him. He tugged the hood on with a pleased grin and made paws with his hands, pretending to be pawing at the air like a cat. (Adair almost died). His captain, who was now wearing a cloak with cat ears on the hood and a fluffy tail on the cape, dashed through the dressing room, weaved through the clothes, and pounced out of the racks at an unsuspecting Knight-Captain Judgment, who had still been trying to hide himself under his hood and so completely missed the pouncing menace.
"Ahh!" Lesus yelped when he felt a body crash into him, toppling them over. He scrambled out from underneath the other boy, hurriedly escaping to the other side of the racks, only for Grisia to give chase while meowing.
Vidar promptly chased after them, only to get tripped by Knight-Captain Sun when he changed directions and pretty much ran under his feet. Vidar's face hit one of the racks. He steadied himself by the walls and rubbed his face, helpless against a child's boundless energy and speed. Just how was Knight-Captain Sun so fast at such a young age? He was darting all over the place! He wasn't even this fast normally in battle! Helpless, Vidar could only shriek at Adair (since he couldn't very well shriek at Knight-Captain Sun, even when he was in toddler form), "Adair, do something about your captain!"
When in doubt about Knight-Captain Sun, seeking Adair's help was always the way to go.
Adair stepped forward and in one scoop grabbed his captain like a wayward kitten. Mini Grisia dangled in the air, blinking in confusion.
Finally free from pursuit, Lesus immediately darted behind Vidar, putting Vidar between him and Grisia. He hid there for a moment before he finally peeked out at Grisia from behind Vidar's legs.
Vidar's heart melted into a puddle of goo. His captain was too cute for this world.
Still suspended in midair, Grisia peered back at Lesus, seemingly unbothered that his feet were dangling off the floor now that he had gotten over his confusion of his new position in the air. He chirped. "Hi, I'm Grisha!" Then, he gave a little wave and a wide grin. Yup, he still looked like a tiny vampire with those fangs, though perhaps it was more correct to call him a ferocious little kitten now. The teeth suited the image, and the cat ears on the hood and the tail on the cape cemented the deal.
At his words, Lesus jumped and hid completely behind Vidar's legs. Vidar's heart gave a twinge. He hadn't thought his captain would be a shy child!
Patting his captain on the head, Vidar stared the golden-haired child down, daring him to get past him to get to his captain. While Knight-Captain Sun was the leader of the Holy Temple and no one Vidar had the right to challenge, this was his captain's well-being in question. He was never afraid to challenge Knight-Captain Sun when it came to anything involving Captain Judgment.
However, a tug on his sleeves made Vidar look down, only to see his captain gesture that it was okay now.
Are you sure? Vidar wondered but did not voice out loud, for it was not his place to question his captain even though his captain was a kid. However, his thoughts must have been evident on his face, for his captain nodded at him. Even as a kid, his captain was just so observant, while Vidar wished his expressions would stop giving him away. It was rude to question his captain, no matter what his current age was, yet his face had given away his doubts! Still, Vidar could not help but worry. Knight-Captain Sun was a lot to deal with. Could his shy captain handle him? But this was his captain…
Vidar stepped aside, allowing his captain to step forward.
At the same time, Adair set his captain down but did not let go of him. Knight-Captain Sun could very well run off if Adair even loosened his grip a teeny tiny bit. So, he didn't.
"Hi…" whispered his captain. A shy smile followed his greeting. "I'm Lesus Lucen."
"Hi, Lesha!" Knight-Captain Sun greeted right back with a wide, toothy grin.
Adair slowly let go of his captain, ready to grab him again if necessary. Little Grisia immediately bounded off and pulled Knight-Captain Judgment with him to play pretend, their roles easily decided by the cloaks they were wearing, though they soon mixed it up. Seeing that Knight-Captain Judgment did not look distressed, Adair let the two kids weave around the dressing room on their own.
He turned, about to comment on how adorable the two kids were, when he saw that Vidar had his face buried in his hands. While the captain was not distressed, the vice-captain quite clearly was, finally letting himself show it now that the two kids were off playing by themselves, leaving the two vice-captains some time to catch their breaths.
Adair quirked a smile and patted Vidar on the back.
Vidar muttered, "Kids."
"Kids," Adair agreed.
That one word aptly summarized their entire experience and pretty much the experience of all the other vice-captains as well.
Hell
At the latest monthly vice-captain drinking session, Tyler had heard plenty of tales from the other vice-captains about captain-sitting, from looking after belligerent teenagers to helping their toddler-aged captains dress. As their predicament continued, the captains’ missions began piling up, and so the vice-captains were tasked more and more often with looking after their captains. None of the vice-captains minded all that much. In fact, plenty of the tales were doting, and there was not a small amount of bragging about the adorableness of their toddler-aged captains.
Tyler, however, had yet to experience his captain shrinking. If his captain had de-aged at any time, Tyler had not been told or asked to look after him.
He took to shadowing his captain, even though his captain was in good hands, always accompanied by two other knight-captains, making Tyler’s concern rather unnecessary. If his captain were to shrink, he had two other captains to make sure he was in good hands. If they needed Tyler's help, they would bring his captain to him.
Tyler was among the few who knew what his captain looked like under his mask, and he knew his captain’s character as an adult. But what was his captain like as a child? Was he as serious as he was now? Had he taken up swordplay even as a child? Even though Tyler knew his captain now, there was still much he didn't know about his captain's past. Tyler was deathly curious and ached to get to know his captain more, just like what the other vice-captains got to do with their captains.
Tyler was there when Knight-Captain Stone shrank and his captain had to take him to the dressing room. He was also there when Knight-Captain Metal shrank, and his captain had to explain himself to the kid that he was not a kidnapper. The knight-captains accompanying his captain often changed, and more often than not, one of them would end up shrinking, causing everyone to shift around again to accommodate for that.
Despite all the shrinking happening to the other knight-captains, Tyler never once saw his captain shrink. It hadn't happened when Tyler wasn't shadowing his captain either. He had asked around to make sure. Given how long it had been since the knight-captains had been cursed, Tyler was coming to a conclusion that he should be relieved about, yet he was not. Wasn't it a good thing not to be cursed?
“Captain…” Tyler ventured to ask one day, wishing to know if he should be prepared for his captain shrinking or not, or if the niggling conclusion that his captain wasn’t ever going to shrink was actually true.
But one glance at the wistful look in his captain’s eyes when Knight-Captain Leaf shrank again made Tyler swallow his original words. His own curiosity wasn't important. Instead, Tyler asked, “Captain, do you need help? I can look after him for you.” He held his hand out and smiled at the now very tiny Knight-Captain Leaf, hoping he looked friendly enough to the child.
However, his captain shook his head. “Thanks for the offer, Tyler. It’s fine. We were on our way to meet Storm. We don’t have a mission, so Knight-Captain Leaf can stay with us.”
“If you say so, Captain. Please remember that there’s no need to hold back. I’m here to support you,” Tyler reminded him wholeheartedly but let his hand drop.
His captain gave a grateful nod. “I appreciate it.”
Tyler watched his captain head off, leading the small Knight-Captain Leaf by the hand. It was a rather adorable sight. His captain was quite good with kids, and they all adored him. Though Tyler wasn't going to be able to meet his captain's younger self and get to know him better, in this single exchange with his captain, Tyler had already learned a whole lot more about his captain than he might have otherwise, further giving him cause to be proud that this man was his captain.
Tyler had plenty to brag about, even if his captain never were to turn into a toddler like the others. He didn't have to turn into a toddler to be adorable. In that, Tyler wasn't missing out.
