Part 8

Stone

In the case of Stone and his vice-captain, the other captains could only take pity on him and rejoice that they had had a much easier time when their vice-captain had looked after them. Thankfully, Aivis was a well behaved kid who was mature for his age. So, although his vice-captain was terrible at looking after kids, Aivis came out fine after a day spent in his vice-captain’s care, despite how little his vice-captain actually looked after him.

“How do I even take care of a kid? Are kids like stray kittens? Can I just give him a plate of food and be done with it?” On and on, Vice-Captain Stone mumbled and mumbled, not paying attention to how Aivis had zoned out after the first few sentences. Luckily for Vice-Captain Stone, his captain was not prone to wandering off, or else he would have had a lost kid to look for with how inattentive he was being.

Aivis was certainly not a stray animal, but that was all the experience Vice-Captain Stone had with looking after young creatures, so he put together a platter of food and placed it in front of Aivis, before he then began mumbling about the benefits of spinach and other leafy greens.

Fortunately for him, Aivis was not a picky eater, and he was a considerate child. Despite not being hungry, he ate what was given to him, as he had been taught not to waste his food.

After the food was gone, Vice-Captain Stone began fretting again about what to do. “The animals we rescued always needed sun. Walks are wonderful for health! The puppies always love going out and taking a walk…”

On and on, Vice-Captain Stone rambled, and he still continued mumbling under his breath even as he led his amused captain outdoors. It was a beautiful day, with blue skies and fluffy white clouds accompanying the bright sun. Going on a stroll together was the perfect choice. At least, that was what Vice-Captain Stone believed.

Aivis did not mind. He humored the funny grown-up who had introduced himself as his future vice-captain. He thought the guy was a bit like a hamster, always going around and around with his words, just like how hamsters loved to go around and around in circles. Aivis quite liked hamsters. They were small, cute, and full of energy.

Vice-Captain Stone was still mumbling when tiny footsteps sounded, pittering to catch up, as the “grown-up” had wandered too far. A small hand slipped into Vice-Captain Stone’s. Vice-Captain Stone looked down to see his young captain smiling up at him.

“Right, it would not do if we got separated. Do you know that only just recently, kids have been kidnapped right out of the plazas while their parents went shopping? Seriously, those bandits have been too daring…” On and on, Vice-Captain Stone rambled, detailing the mission that the Holy Temple had taken on to rescue the kidnapped children, even though he did not have all the information about that mission, such as how they had gotten a mother and child to help out. Even with missing information, he was able to ramble on without an end in sight.

Aivis listened and thought that yup, this funny grown-up was definitely like a hamster, and Aivis had to hold on tight, or else the funny adult might get lost or kidnapped. He clearly needed someone to look after him.

Earth

If Georgo had even an ounce of Aivis's consideration and maturity, Vice-Captain Earth would have had a much easier time looking after him. Unfortunately for Vice-Captain Earth, he didn't. So, even though Vice-Captain Earth was a much more responsible vice-captain than a certain vice-captain who loved to ramble, he could not say he had much success taking care of his captain.

"You're so t-tall," Vice-Captain Earth had blurted when he came face-to-face with his teen captain. He immediately covered his mouth with his hand, eyes widening. He couldn't believe he had blurted something so rude to his captain. He just could not help his surprise to be asked to captain-sit someone who was already almost taller than him.

His captain looked to be in his early teens. For such an age, he was already quite towering. It was no wonder that he would shoot up to a height way beyond Vice-Captain Earth's measly centimeters. At least for now, they were still eye level, even though the other one was so much younger than him.

"Duh, I'm going to be the tallest one of us all!" his captain crowed, not the least bit modest, even at such an age. His captain really hadn't changed, huh? In that sense, his captain was quite honest.

"Um…" Vice-Captain Earth couldn't help but say, as it was in his nature to be truthful.

"What?" his captain snapped.

"You d-don't grow up to be the tallest…" he whispered, half afraid of his captain exploding in fury at the answer.

"What?! Who turned out taller? Don't tell me… Grisia?! That can't be true!" his captain protested, as if that were the worst thing that could ever happen. Vice-Captain Earth could understand it somewhat. It was a terrible feeling to have your friend grow taller than you and leave you behind. It was something that had personally happened to Vice-Captain Earth, so he knew very well from personal experience why his captain would detest it so.

Vice-Captain Earth shook his head, glad that he didn't have to lie about this. Knight-Captain Sun certainly had nothing on his captain's height. He said, "Knight-Captain Stone is two centimeters taller than you."

"Anyone else?" his captain asked.

"No, you're the second tallest of the knight-captains." At 186 centimeters tall, his captain only lost out in two centimeters to Knight-Captain Stone, the tallest of all the knight-captains.

"Score! I still win!" his captain crowed, to a look of confusion from Vice-Captain Earth. With a wave of his hand in dismissal, his captain explained, "Aivis is part of the ice cube faction. He doesn't count. I'm still the tallest among the warm faction!"

"That you are, Captain," Vice-Captain Earth agreed, glad that his captain was actually a pretty optimistic kid and had not been disheartened to hear that he was not the tallest among the knight-captains. Being the second tallest out of twelve was certainly no small feat. If Vice-Captain Earth were even the third or fourth tallest out of the vice-captains, he would be quite content. Perhaps then, the sun knights would not always tease him so. Vice-Captain Earth let his mind wander. If he had several more centimeters to his height, he would not even need to ask the others to reach the tallest shelf for him, or carry a stool with him to the prayer rooms just in case he needed it as a step stool. While no one ever complained when he asked them to give him a helping hand, it still made him feel embarrassed having to ask in the first place.

"What would you like to do today, Captain?" Vice-Captain Earth ventured to ask, not at all sure of what one was supposed to do when looking after a teenager.

His captain just waved his hand in dismissal yet again. "You don't have to look after me. I know my way around. It's not like I'm a toddler! And I still remember those other times I shrank, so it's not like this is anything new. Bye."

With that, his captain flounced off, much to Vice-Captain Earth's alarm. "Captain!"

Oh no oh no oh no. He couldn't even keep track of a single kid? The sun knights were going to laugh at him again and oh how he hated it when they pinched his cheeks!

"Captain!" he cried, chasing after the rebellious teenager, who had already disappeared around the corner, leaving him no one to look after. If only he had grabbed hold of Georgo's hand like what Aivis had done with Vice-Captain Stone, then maybe the rebellious teenager would not have successfully run off.
