Part 5

Ice

Vice-Captain Ice was dying.

There was one time during his childhood when he had nearly drowned—water had rushed into his mouth and nose, and he hadn't been able to breathe. He would have drowned if not for dormant ice powers he hadn't even known he possessed bursting forth to freeze the water and allow him something to grasp with his flailing hands—and this felt a lot like it. He was drowning all over again, nearly about to die, all air gone from his lungs as he flailed with nothing to save him in the face of sheer cuteness.

Yes, Vice-Captain Ice was currently dying of cute. He gulped several times but the effort proved useless, for he could form no words (not that he even spoke much in the first place, but that was an entirely different story. Being able to speak and wishing to speak were two completely separate matters). The point was, he couldn't speak right now even if he wanted to.

Because his captain was just too cute for words. How could his captain be so cute?

His captain couldn't be any older than ten currently, his cheeks still chubby, eyes full of wonder. And oh did his hair look soft and fluffy. It was definitely the kind that made you want to ruffle his hair. But how could he ruffle his captain's hair? He was not Vice-Captain Metal, who was always so overbearing. What kind of vice-captain overstepped his boundaries like that? To dare to ruffle a knight-captain's hair… Vice-Captain Ice couldn't imagine it.

"This is… my room?" his captain asked in wonder.

All Vice-Captain Ice could do was nod. He had been told to look after his captain, who had wanted to go to the bakery, so of course he took his captain to a bakery right away. But it turned out that his captain didn't want to go to any old bakery but rather his father's, which Vice-Captain Ice could not take him to without consulting the rest of the Twelve Holy Knights first, since he would be cluing a citizen in about what was happening to the Twelve Holy Knights. But further (one-sided) conversations, in which his captain rambled at him, revealed that his captain had wanted to go home to his family's bakery so he could bake. Well, if baking was what his captain wanted to do, he could do that in his own room in the Holy Temple.

So, he took his captain back to the Holy Temple, and now his captain stood at the entrance to his room, eyes shining as he marveled at the room, which was furnished with an oven, stove, countertops, and an ice box. Pots and pans lined the walls, with bags of ingredients stashed below. His captain had expanded on his personal kitchen throughout the years, so much that there was little he needed from the Holy Temple's kitchens anymore. He had everything he needed in his own room, even though the kitchen in his room wasn't all that big. After all, he still needed a place for his bed and clothes, but they were obviously secondary to the well stocked kitchen.

"I have my own personal kitchen?" his captain whispered.

A nod, and his captain's entire face lit up.

"I'm so glad I became a holy knight!" his captain said.

Why so cute, Captain?!

Vice-Captain Ice could not help it. He tried to squash down the urge, but at the smile that his captain gave him, Vice-Captain Ice found his hand disobeying him. It reached out, inching toward that head of soft and fluffy hair, and then he placed his hand on top of his captain's head and gave him a pat. It wasn't quite hair ruffling, but to Vice-Captain Ice, this was close enough and the extent of his courage.

His captain didn't even mind and just smiled more widely at him. Oh that was the most adorable smile in the whole entire world!

"Would you like to bake together?" his captain asked shyly, eyes lowering before glancing up at him again.

Of course! How could his captain be this cute? Would his captain mind if the head patting continued even when he grew up?

Vice-Captain Ice wished he were as daring as Vice-Captain Metal. Now he knew why his fellow vice-captain always liked ruffling his captain's hair. It was definitely something one could grow addicted to. Vice-Captain Ice had only experienced patting his captain's head just once, but he longed to be able to continue to do so without judgment. If he had even an ounce of Vice-Captain Metal's courage, then perhaps he would be able to continue on indulging in this fantasy.

His cute captain peered at the ingredients that his adult self had laid out on the counter, deep in thought. He even wondered out loud, "These are ingredients for a chocolate cake? No, a blueberry cake? Wait no, a strawberry cake… So many different kinds of cake! Could I have mastered cake making?"

After pondering over it, his captain peered up at him shyly and asked, "Um, do you know what kind of cake I was trying to make?"

Vice-Captain Ice just gestured at the entire counter.

"Um… All the different kinds?" his captain asked.

A nod.

"Oh. Was I any good at making them?"

Another nod.

"Oh. Um, I'd like to try right now, but I don't remember how to make them. Could you help me?"

Another nod.

Vice-Captain Ice happily rolled up his sleeves and got to work with his cute captain. His captain had always been cute, always so earnest and caring and just so happy when other people enjoyed what he baked. Even if he were to get a stomachache from eating too much, Vice-Captain Ice had sworn to always finish eating what his captain made. While his captain's smiles rarely showed on his face as an adult, and he said very little, his happiness at having his baked goods eaten was always evident in his body language.

As a kid, his captain was much more expressive but also shyer. He smiled easily and was unafraid to babble. As they mixed the ingredients together, his captain kept a steady stream of conversation. It was fascinating getting to see this side of his captain. Vice-Captain Ice knew that this was who his captain was underneath the mask he always had to present, and it was such an honor being able to meet the boy who would grow up into an equally endearing man.

When they finished the first cake and stuck it in the oven to bake, his adorable captain gave him one of those sweet smiles again. Vice-Captain Ice reached out without thinking to pat his head, accidentally leaving a streak of flour in his soft hair.

Alarmed, he tried to pat the flour away, only to leave more flour.

His captain just laughed and shook his head to shake off the flour, his laughter carefree and bright.

Vice-Captain Ice died all over again.
