POT PS2 game review...sort of

Prince of Tennis: Form the Strongest Team for the PS2 is so utterly addicting. It has been almost the only game that I've been playing these past few months. My first impressions of the game are here. And now, I present pics of the game, along with movie files that I took of the game. I find them hilarious. :3

Beware, there are lots of pics. And since I have no idea how to take actual screencaps from my tv, I just took them w/ my camera. So they're not that clear.
Edit: yay, other people have played this game too. Now I don't feel so lonely in my love of this game. XD

Don't know if you can read the name, but it's "byouki desu." Meaning, we're sick. Ehehe, they're all people who have gone to the hospital before. XD And this Tezuka is strong. His stats are all maxed out. And he can 'awaken.' (I finally got him to come back from treatment)


Utterly crack team with Sakuno as the leader. Ahahah, it's team "I *heart* Girls." Though I wonder why I have Mizuki in there. 0_0


And so team 'I *heart* Girls' plays team 'byouki desu.'


First match is doubles! Kirihara and Mizuki against Tezuka and Echizen. Ehehe, I put Kirihara and Mizuki together because they both have curly hair. :3


Look, even their uniforms are sort of similar. They can be twins.

And so Kirihara hits Tezuka with his Knuckle serve even though Tezuka is up at volley. :3 Tsk tsk, I didn't know you had it in you, Sakuno.


Mizuki is evil. He's saying, "Give me the ball!' And then he takes the serve away from the other ppl. XD

Oishi about to do his Moon Volley. He yells out his moves so loudly, it's funny. Like, "DROP VOLLEY!" Ehehe, not an ounce of sneakiness in him.

This one is features Sanada and Atobe as one pair and Tezuka and Niou as another pair. Ehehe, Tezuka does a laser beam and Niou cosplays as Tezuka. XD I love it that you can teach the weirdest moves to every character. I *heart* hearing everyone say Atobe's rondo to destruction.

The end of the match between Sanada, Atobe, Tezuka, and Niou. Just Sanada in his glory, yelling "Juunen hayai!" (10 years to early) to his opponents.

Too bad I wasn't able to capture Tezuka's eyes turning red (I taught him Kirihara's 'danger' mode), or Saeki doing masquerade, or Niou doing Atobe's rondo. I taught everyone so many silly moves. XD It's hard to get the characters to do those moves when I'm not controlling them...I have to let the computers do that...since I need to have my camera in my hand. 0_0

Eheheh, my favorite characters to use are Kirihara, Niou, Yagyuu, and Renji. Er...they're all from Rikkai...hm. XD Well...I guess it's because they're all so strong. And my favorite characters from the series, minus Ryoma. I had to stop using Kirihara...since I didn't really want to K'O all of my opponents. :3

Have you tried letting Niou be team leader and then executing his leader thing during gameplay? (not the "team power" thing, the other one) It's hilarious!

Yeah... I was playing the 6-game set rule, and was NOT impressed when the score was changed from 5-1 to 1-5... XDDDDD

Ehehe. Yup...me using Niou as the leader wouldn't help...since I would just be hurting my own score. XD

Now...Renji as the leader is very scary as well. ^^; My brother made a team with him as the leader...and I found it hard getting rid of Renji's winning predictions.

Hm...I don't think I know all of the leader specials yet, though I did try a lot of them out. XD

...hm...is Tezuka coming back...entirely random? I've made so many teams with him in it...and only once did he come back for me. ;_;

Now that's something I need to try~ Renji as leader~ XD I spent a lot of time getting Yukimura (had to look everywhere on the net, eventually found out how on a Japanese fan site) but his special is just so BORING. And his moves are BORING too. But he's quite hard to beat one-on-one. The hardest one in the whole game I think.

I read somewhere (think it was the official game site) that if Tezuka leaves early on, then it's more likely he comes back before the tournament starts. But by when should he have left, and the actual likelihood of him coming back, I have no idea ^^"""

I think getting him to leave around the 6th week is probably the best...though it's hard to get him to do that. And he doesn't always come back even when I get him to do that! I had to remake my "byouki desu" team twice to get it to work. :3 *sigh* I think I'll refrain from making more teams with Tezuka.

Renji as leader is scary. It's like...a death match. So little time to win or else!

I wish I could train Yukimura's stats up. Because having his energy level stop at 3 is no fun. Haha, yeah, I don't like his moves. And having him as leader is pretty boring too. It's like...a weakened version of Atobe's special, since he can only ever up the player stats to S...while Atobe can make it to SS. :3

I still have no idea what Sanada's special does though. 0_0

Same here *sigh* apparently Tachibana may leave the team because of old injury as well, but because I don't like him too much I never used him... so can't tell if it's true or not ^^"

I never managed to make someone's stats to all SS. It's annoying when you have to waste time taking them out to play or helping them overcome the "barrier" when they reach all S-levels. ^^"""" For Yukimura I just made him learn loads of new techniques, so that when I play exhibition match I can load him up and get him to do drop shots and rondos and such XD

Sanada... he pulls out a Japanese sword and says something I didn't quite catch. Scary tennis boy waving a sword on the tennis court... XD

Ehehe, I should have done that too with Yukimura. I wonder why I even bothered having him to those training stuff. I guess I was hoping that he would up the levels of the training, which never happened. I only taught him Higuma Otoshi and something else, I think. Something that was red.

Hm...all SS characters. I got Echizen's stats to all SS before. I don't think he ever reaches his limit. Ehehe, and my gosh...the other character that I got to all SS was Kurobane. :3 Even though his stats were maxed out...he still wasn't that great to use. Since he doesn't really have any terribly good moves...except for getting slapped by his partner.

I love teaching everyone moves that they actually say. Like Ohtori's Scud serve, Atobe's rondo, Kikumaru beam and Kikumaru bazooka, Yagyuu's laser beam, and Sakaki's 'you're out of the regulars' saying. :3 Are there other moves that they say the lines for too?

I probably spend too many weekends on taking them out to play XD so getting all SS just wasn't possible! I once made a team of Echizen, Sakuno, An and Dan... and they won the tournament. That was really quite funny XD (the Sakuno vs Tezuka match was HELL to play though XDDDDDDD)

I can't think of other moves that does the speech thing...

Drive B is cool. Drive A is annoying because it goes out half the time, but I use it anyway along with Rondo and the knuckle serve, because once the opponent's energy is down you can knock them out with the move and it's just COOL <--- sadistic

Hm...I'm not sure how they assign the red skills and the blue skills. I think the red skills are more technique? Since it's done with the circle button, which is for slices and lobs.

Haha, I spend a lot of time going out to play too. Getting up to 100% is awesome, since having a lot of energy levels right from the start is so fun. I rarely do the special training...except for that byouki desu team with Yukimura as the leader. I just did special training most of the time because even when I took them out to play, they almost always ended up going to the gym or doing some other kind of training anyway. -_-

Lol. My brother made a team like that too. I was playing against him with Tezuka and Atobe I think...and I lost. I got aced a lot by Sakuno. 0_0 It's just...so wrong! XD Haha, I was using Kirihara...turned red eye fast. And I was like...what? Kirihara's losing to Sakuno? Knuckle serve time. ^^; Sakuno...does a 360 degree flip when hit...poor her.

Hehe. I like using Niou's 'dirty trick' at the net too, since it knocks out their rackets. But it does go out a lot too. :3 Haha, since I used Kirihara too many times, I decided to use other people...so I started using Niou. And I ended up teaching him Knuckle Serve and Kirihara's smash. :3

Was just reading the official site (http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/tenipuri/saikyo/), it gives a list of the techs where the character yells. (See トピックス, 小ネタ・ウラ技集). Apparently if Kikumaru does Higuma Otoshi, he yells "大五郎落とし" *snerk*

Wah!! Does he really? Haha, that's cute. I have to try that out! I taught a lot of people Higuma Otoshi too, but none of them say anything, I think. I did take a look at the official site, but I must have missed that. I guess I wasn't reading it closely enough, since it's all in Japanese and it takes me so long to read it. XD

Ehehe, I finally did make a team with Kikumaru learning Higuma Otoshi. And he does yell "daigoro otoshi!" It's very funny. XD

I've also made a team with Niou as the captain, though I never actually got to use his leader special. :3

Ehehe. The game itself has a lot of pre-made teams in it that we play against the Nationals. I had to play against a team called, "we went to the hopsital before" or something along that line. When I saw that team...I was like...my gosh, I have to make that team! XD I laughed so hard when I read their team name. It's so true...too many players have gotten injuries. ^^;

There was also this team with people who had 'round-ish' heads. Like Jackal. And Oishi. And Ishida. Ehehe, I can't remember who the other two were, but I laughed a lot at that team too.

Damn, I saw that game when I was in China; I didn't buy it because I didn't have a gameboy/ps2 to use anyways. >_>

Now I really wish I did.

Kirihara and Mizuki really do look like twins. I kept getting them confused when I first saw PoT. Maybe they're the possible lovechild of divorecee parents? XD

It's such a fun game. I actually bought a Taiwan version of the PS2 just so I can play this game. It was the only game that I had for the system until I bought a few more Japanese games last month, but I haven't really played them much. This game is still my favorite. It's awesome. Though it does freeze once in awhile. 0_0 But making your own teams and teaching them crazy techniques is so fun~! Hehe, I mean...watching Sanada run around with smoke coming out of his nose is kinda funny. (taught him Izumi's skill...the guy who keeps going "nande?" XD

Perhaps I'll have to track this one down as well. It looks awesome. XD Do you need to know very much Japanese to get through it, or do you think someone might be able to muddle through it with only limited knowledge?

I haven't played Smash Hit 2 before...because when I got my PS2 that could play Japanese games this year, it was already hard to find a copy of it (in Taiwan at least). I was so looking forward to that game too...but I wondered if I would be disappointed with it after playing this game. :3 I love Rikkai after all and like having them all in the game. XD

I'm taking Japanese right now (done w/ first year Japanese) and could play through the game without any problems (a few trial and errors though). My brother hasn't taken Japanese classes before, so he has a katakana chart in front of him when he plays to understand some of the choices. I think limited knowledge is fine, as long as you know how to pronounce stuff. :)

I got my copy from www.ncsx.com ... I don't know what their shipping range is, though, or if it's just to the US.

It seems, from the caps you posted, that there's just more to this game than SH2, not the least of which is having all of Rikkai available. (One of my pet peeves with SH2 is that we only get Sanada, Kirihara, and Yanagi there, and they're given the doubles players' specials -- ie, Kiri gets Yagyuu's Laser, and Yanagi gets Marui's Tightrope ... ehhh, it's not quite the same, imho.)

Yeah, I'd imagine that there would be more to this game than SH2...since it is newer. There should be more moves and they're most likely more accurate to the manga too. As for Kirihara having Yagyuu's Laser, he still does in this game. But I don't think Yanagi has Marui's tightrope. That would be...kind of weird. 0_0

I like the personalized voices. When Yanagi serves his special serve to Inui, he says, 'Sadaharu, kakugo!' Er...don't really know how to spell that. ^^;;

I also got the game and it's so much fun. I have 3 POT games and this one is the best so far. Im so bad at video games & keep losing all the time that i only play the strong characters lol.. so i always played Atobe, Fuji, Kirihara & Sanada. Kirhara is so bad with his KO technique. Ive got a Super-saiyan Fuji too, and its so funny to hear Fuji screams S-y-u-s-u-k-e Beam !!, and Atobe also does the flip that eiji do. Atobe-sama also has that cool back shot he does when he's turned back against the net and he kinda raise his leg and he hits the ball between his leg. Kakoii! Ore-sama is so special so he's da only one who can do that ^_^. I havent been playing lately.. I'm going to use your team combinations and play this weekend.

Yay! Another person who has played the game~! Hehe, I think I improved...but I still suck compared to my brother. So I have to use strong characters against him, or else I have no chance of winning. The computers are easy to beat now though. We play against them on hard mode. (though I got beat so badly when I first did that)

I love hearing everyone doing Kikumaru's beam. I think the first one that we taught it to was Atobe. Atobe beam! So funny. XD And then bazooka to Tachibana. Tachibana bazooka!! He says it so funnily. XD Hm...I think I should teach Atobe laser beam too. I want to hear him say it.

Ehehe, I think I might make some new teams this weekend too...though I don't know what I should make anymore. :3

I wanted to play these POT games ever since Smash Hit came out...but when I finally got a PS2 that could play them, three games came out already! But even though I had to buy another PS2 just to play this game, I thought it was worth it. I played this game soooooo much these past few months.

Aw...no rest of Rikkai? I heard about that...dang, I like using Niou and Yagyuu too. And Jackal has a very good leader ability. And teaching everyone how to do Niou's masquerade is so fun. I taught Tezuka and Saeki how to do that. XD

I was thinking about getting Smash Hit 2, but I think this game is enough to satisfy my POT gaming needs. Ehehe, along with the Nintendo DS game. That's cool too. :)

Aw. Yeah, I couldn't resist not playing these games, so I asked my relatives in Taiwan to buy me a PS2 there and the game. I never figured out how to mod a PS2...but I wish our PS2's could play both Japanese games and American games. It's...not very convenient when I have to keep switching the consoles.

I wish my PS2 were modded instead. It'd make things so much easier. Now we have two PS2's. 0_0 And our multitap doesn't work with the slim PS2. Have to get a new one.

...hm...well...I think you might be able to find the games on ebay. I wanted to buy Smashi Hit 2 as well...but the stores didn't sell it anymore...so I just stuck with this game.

I have this game ,too. And i have completed the gallery already.
But the game DVD has gone when i picked it to play at my friend's house. TT-TT
This game is really fun. I love it most of Tenipuri Tennis game for PS2 because there're all Rikkai boys! ^^

To unlocked golden-haired Tachibana is really annoyed for me. It requires good lucks. - -"

Yeah, I completed the gallery too. I was missing 5 of Echizen's pics, but after I found out that they were just him with the eye patch, they were so easy to get. XD Some of the pics that gave me trouble were Kikumaru's beam, Ginta's captain's shocked face, and Kabaji's imitation of the hadoukyuu. :3

I hope that there will be more Prince of Tennis games in the future...since now the anime's over. I really want to see the new characters appearing in the manga to be featured in the games too. But since the games are mostly based on the manga, maybe my hopes will come true. :3

I haven't unlocked long-haired Shishido or golden-haired Tachibana yet...since I haven't really used them that much. Hehe, I should do that next.
