A fanfic meme. I was antsy all day yesterday and couldn't sit still for some reason. Didn't want to do anything at all either! And so I answered this instead of doing something productive. :'D Why am I so long-winded here...
1. How about a brief introduction of yourself?
Hi, I'm Lucathia. I consider myself a lurker but am trying to be less of one... by commenting more. =P
2. Fabulous! And what got you into fan fiction to begin with?
I thought of fanfic as a way to connect to fandom. It used to be the only communication I had with other fans was through my reviews of their stories and their reviews of my stories. I think I passed around my first fanfic in a mailing list and even got asked to join another mailing list because of it. After finding other ways of "connecting" to fandom, I write a lot less now. A lot of my time is spent dabbling in other things. I'm also more conscious of my writing and hesitate to post up random pieces (I used to post my stories the moment I finished writing a portion without giving much thought to what exactly I was trying to do with the piece, hahaha... now, many tidbits never see the light of day...). I am so terrible at updating fics in a timely fashion now. It can take months or even years...
The other big motivator was that I just wanted to see more of my favorite characters, as well as write ideas that nag at me.
I still prefer to read other people's works more than write my own. I'm lazy. =P So if someone's already written an idea I had... perfect! That means less work for me, and I'd then go explore some other idea that hopefully hasn't been done yet. I suppose this is why I'm writing in more and more obscure fandoms, since there's less of a chance that an idea has already been explored by someone else.
3. I see, so what kind of fan fiction do you like to write?
Gen. Missing scenes. As well as continuations. I like exploring series that have already ended... which usually means most of fandom has already moved on, haha... When it's not missing scenes or continuations, I like writing crossovers because I get to throw the characters in new situations and have them meet different characters.
Recently, I've also started to like writing romantic comedies (or just comedy and fluffy pieces). Lighthearted pieces really lift me up~
4. Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters? Or are you a fandom whore?
I dabble in fandoms and rarely write for the same fandom. Which, I guess, makes me hard to follow. The most I ever wrote for a fandom was for Shaman King. That was because I had somehow gained a readership in that fandom, so it was comfortable writing more SK knowing that there would be people reading it. I also felt kind of obligated to write more for that series. XD; Now, I don't think I have much of a readership at all, so I've continued my ways of flitting from fandom to fandom. The fandoms keep getting more and more obscure too. XD;
5. What is your most popular fan fic and why do you think people like it so?
I would need to go a few years back for this. XD; Even now, it'd have to be Hoshi ga Hoshii desu because I updated it very, very frequently and finished what was a fairly long fic for me within a year. The timing was good (there were still a lot of people into SK at the time), the fic was full of clichés (*cough* amnesia was the biggest one), and Hao was a popular character, so having him as the protagonist definitely attracted readers. It helped that I had a lot of readers commenting, so I figured pretty early on what people liked to see and were excited about. I was also evil and wrote tons of cliffhangers. Since the fic has a lot of reviews, even now, people are still reading it. The number of reviews really does attract readers. ^^;; HgHd was a fic that I could not have written if it hadn't been so popular because it wouldn't have gotten anywhere otherwise. I totally started the fic on a whim. It was the result of my "post what I have up immediately!!" phase.
A slightly more recent "popular" oneshot (hence, not affected by my update speed) would be Tension for Bakuman. (The number of favorites for this fic has suddenly shot up). I've been very amused about this because I'm pretty sure it's because the anime for this started last Fall, which means the series itself has gotten more popular. Still, people haven't been favoriting my other two Bakuman fics, so it's still something to do with this piece (or maybe the other two are just boring). I'm guessing it's because of the idea behind this fic. Several people must've had the very same idea too, so maybe it tickled them to see it actually carried out.
6. Forget other people, what is the fan fiction you're most proud of?
Hm, Those Left Behind for Bokurano. Because I got to experiment with different styles of writing, I like my characterization, aaaand, yay for minor characters! The ficlets all pack a lot of emotion too. Writing seems to be getting harder and harder for me, so forcing myself to write daily for this collection of ficlets was one of the best experiences I had. I felt like I gained a lot from writing this! I can't say the same for a lot of my other fics...
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
Very, very difficult. It's like pulling teeth. =/ I struggle with... everything. Right after I write a sentence, I have this need to reread it several times. And then after I write a paragraph, I reread that too. >__> Even when I write a comment or a post, I reread what I write I don't know how many times. (and yet there are still mistakes in them)
I guess my everyday communication factors into this too because I'm very conscious of what I say too. I have to think of what I say very carefully before I actually speak (which means the conversation often moves on before I've even said anything). When I write... I have the same habit of looking back at what I've written and not being able to move on.
So... difficult aspects of writing? Getting things down.
Next would be planning things out because my stories often have very weak plot or the plot just unravels in the end. *sigh* Another difficult aspect is getting character's voices right...
Anyway, writing is hard. =P
8. Write a few sentences about your favorite pairing or character.
I have too many favorite characters. ^^;; I don't seem to have written enough fic about them. XD;
Arctic Fox (1/2 Prince) - This is probably not what this question is asking for, but I can't wait until we see his RL self. =P Because his RL self is what got me liking him, but I caaaaan't write about that when the English fandom's not at that point yet!! D:
Klavier Gavin (Ace Attorney) - I've started two fics starring him. I've yet to finish either. >__> But oh man, looove. I never thought I'd like him this much. So much that I find Phoenix and Edgeworth boring. XD;
Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho) - My love for him will never die. XD; I still devour YYH fics when I can find good ones. I still want to write a Kurama fic one day because I can't believe I haven't done so yet. =/ It'd probably be a family centric one. I adore Kurama and his family~
Seta Soujiro (Rurouni Kenshin) - My first ever fanfic was a 1st person POV fic starring sadistic!Soujiro. Oh man, I was flamed so badly. XD; I kind of wish I'd written the first ending I'd planned instead of changing gears halfway, but either way, my characterization was terrible and the fic was full of plotholes. I wonder if I'll ever write a better fic for poor Soujiro.
Hihara Kazuki (La Corda d'Oro) - So, the manga for this series is like, ending next month. I need to catch up with this series. Even though I was so very into this series two years ago, I haven't written a single thing for the series. Not even a drabble! 0___0;; This needs to be remedied sometime. Hihara kind of made me realize that I really like sempai types of characters.
... you know, I think I'll stop here because I'm not too sure what I'm trying to do with what I listed above, haha... completely off topic?
9. Are there any fan fiction cliches/trends that you can't stand or you're just sick of?
AUs. I like AUs that change a small part of canon and explore what might have happened because of that change, but I'm not too fond of AUs that plop characters in entirely different roles because I don't see the point, but if the fic is well written, I'd still read it. It's like reading an original story then. *shrugs*
I also do not like soulmates, reincarnation, overpowered characters...
10. Are you guilty of any of the fan fiction cliche/trends? Or any other ones?
Probably, yeah. Writing about amnesia, for one. XD; And then about crossdressing, though I didn't finish that one. Other cliches are more fandom specific, otherwise I'm straying from the more general cliches now, which might be why less people read what I write now too. XD;
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Rurouni Kenshin. With sadistic!Soujiro that I mentioned above, haha. I was part of an RK mailing list back then and sent the fic to people in the mailing list. Someone even drew me fanart for the fic but I don't think I ever replied to that person because one of the characters wasn't even someone I had been writing about. 0___0;; I'm not too sure where our communication went wrong, or if my writing was just that bad that they couldn't tell who I was writing about. I really should have said something in reply. =/
12. Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them you love to write.
...this is hard when I rarely write more than one fic about any characters. XD; This is more feasible for what I like to read and why I like to read fics about those characters...
I seriously cannot think of a single character or pairing that I've written a lot. I wrote three fics about Yagyuu + Niou, but that was only because I was participating in exchanges. Writing them was really frustrating. XD; I don't think I'd have ever started those fics on my own if not for those exchanges. Part of this, I feel, is because there's a lot of fanon interpretation for their characters but my take doesn't exactly fit with most of fanon. (and my take is boring too...)
Oh, but let's see, there's Namiki Masahiro from Mekakushi no Kuni that I'm still writing a lot about (since Memories of the Future is pretty much the only longfic I'm working on at the moment). I love writing him because he's not exactly a good guy but he kind of is at the same time (he just won't admit it). I don't think my characterization of him is all that great (I certainly feel like I'm making him too nice and too indifferent at times), but I do love writing him. I feel like I need to reread the series again though, because I'm slowly losing his characterization.
... I guess I really do only like writing about obscure series because then there's less people to compare my stuff to. =/ And with my slow writing speed, obscure series = less of a chance someone's already explored the idea.
13. What would you call your "writing style"?
Stream of consciousness. It's sort of changed now?
My writing is also fairly simple and not very heavy with detail or imagery... I can't write that way even if I want to! Some people can manage flowery prose but I'm just like... this happened. Then this. The end.
-___-;;
Very straightforward and matter-of-fact.
14. Do you read other people's fan fic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Yes, tons. I read more than I write. =P I mostly read fics about my favorite characters. I generally don't read series I write about... like, when I was writing Shaman King fics, I didn't read Shaman King fics. I guess I didn't like having overlapping ideas with other people or getting influenced by their fics... ^^;; I like reading long, plotty fic over oneshots. I read a lot of Harry Potter fics (because there are tons of authors in this fandom that have written long, plotty fic of every imaginable kind) and have read many long fics in other fandoms, but sadly those are fewer in number than HP fics.
Now I don't have too much of trouble with not reading what I write since it's not like I've been sticking to any one fandom. ^^;; (But I guess I haven't been writing what I read... like, I've been reading KHR fics lately, but I have not a single urge to write KHR)
Uhhh, I also love reading crossovers. :)
I am also guilty of getting into a series for the sake of reading fanfic about it.
15. Name ONE thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or shy to do so.
It's not me being too shy or afraid... I'm just incapable of writing my ideas because I'm so removed from series I want to write about (it's been too long) that I don't have a grasp of the characters anymore! *rolls eyes*
But I'm the sort of person who sees a heavily supported pairing and just wants to... break them up. By breaking them up, I mean that I like to explore having them paired up with other characters for a change. So like... Dino/Hibari from Reborn for example. It's so overdone! I'm a huge Dino fan and would love to see him paired with anyone, so if I ever wrote Dino fic, I'd strive to explore his relationship with someone else other than Hibari for a change. Not that I wouldn't read or write D18. *shrugs* I like variety.
Phoenix/Edgeworth and Apollo/Klavier are the generally supported pairings from Ace Attorney... which means I somehow like anything but those pairings the best. >__> (Still, I'd devour Klavier x Anyone because I'm a huge Klavier fan. But I do so love Klavier x Phoenix and Klavier x Edgeworth).
I like obscure pairings just like how I like obscure series. I don't like huge fandoms and I don't like popular pairings most of the time. =/ I can be convinced otherwise though.
So I guess I'd love to write obscure stuff that probably no one would read. Or pairings that no one supports. XD;
(Currently, I'd really love to see something with Kirihara and Crauza from Tenipuri...)
16. Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the bloated ego?
I'm not very good at taking criticism or incorporating advice. =/ This is why my writing is still very terrible, since I haven't exactly gone out of my way to invite constructive criticism, because even when it's given, I don't do anything with it for that particular piece (because what's done is done...unless the criticism was received before the fic was published). I do keep it in mind for my next writing project though.
I guess I'm not exactly looking for criticism and just want my fics to be read for fun instead of with a critical eye. It's a different matter if I'm specifically hoping for constructive criticism.
I like to think I don't have a bloated ego. =P I do have periods when I think, "Hey, this isn't that bad! I'm actually a little proud of this!" I don't think that counts as having a bloated ego...
17. When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
Noooothing. XD;
Well, I guess, when I write, deadlines definitely motivate me. Or at least, they push me to actually write. No deadlines? I probably wouldn't be writing. Still, it's not very comfortable to write with a looming deadline. Too much pressure. =/ Mind goes blank. And all that.
Quiet room helps. I cannot write with music at all. The music makes my thoughts spin too much. Cutting myself off from the internet helps... because otherwise I'd be checking my email every other minute. =/ Waaay too impulsive.
This sounds like, "What distracts you when you write?" instead of what helps...
18. What inspires you?
Characters! If I like a character a lot, I usually want to see more of them. Which means writing about them.
Ideas would be next. If there's a particular idea I want to see and it hasn't been written... that means I have to write it for it to exist. XD;
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction experiences and yourself as a writer?
... I write fic to connect with fandom. I'm not much of a writer, though I consider myself more of a writer than an artist (because my art sucks). My writing sucks too, but it's just not immediately noticeable. =P I like to create (whether it's writing or crafts or something completely different) but am not skilled in any one area...
With all that I wrote above, I'm surprised I'm still writing because I don't seem to be that into writing, hahaha... XD; But the characters!! The ideas!!
1. How about a brief introduction of yourself?
Hi, I'm Lucathia. I consider myself a lurker but am trying to be less of one... by commenting more. =P

The ideas!!

Date: 2011-03-02 04:55 am (UTC)Oh, what idea do you have? My timing is pretty horrible nowadays... I can never manage to write anything on time. Writing fics for birthdays and holidays is nice. :D (I can't wait for Yukimura's album~)
I didn't think I would like Klavier so much. XD I really want to finish those two fics with him...
Aw, thanks for reading those two fics. :)
Good night to you!

Date: 2011-03-03 12:21 am (UTC)I've only written some short FE fics. (You do mean Fire Emblem, right?) XD; Ah, I don't think I ever linked these in my fic masterlist. Here they are:
I forgot I didn't post the first one in my journal. XD; I kept thinking that I'd one day write a longer version based on that idea, but that never happened. XD;;
Conjoined by Mystery and Fate (FE9)
Knives Over Staves (FE9)
Both are really short. XD I need to write longer stuff for FE!

Date: 2011-03-06 04:37 am (UTC)I'm now writting the fic, hope finish it for a Yukimura's belated gift xD
And if in the future you write more about FE i want to read it \o/!!

I'm all motivated now to write more FE. XD

Date: 2011-03-11 05:32 pm (UTC)"I used to post my stories the moment I finished writing a portion without giving much thought to what exactly I was trying to do with the piece, hahaha"
I think I'm going back and forth - I used to do that, then I started thinking about my writing and then not wanting to post because I thought they needed improving and then never post them, except I'm now, at least for my shorter pieces, worrying less about what the fic means. XDD;;
"The other big motivator was that I just wanted to see more of my favorite characters, as well as write ideas that nag at me."
:D *grins*
It was because of HgHd that I found you! :D :D
"Right after I write a sentence, I have this need to reread it several times."
I don't reread after writing a sentence, but I will eventually go back and end up rereading the fic over and over again before I've finished. And then I started editing. XDD;; I've... kinda memorised my fics this way. XDDD;;;;;
"I have to think of what I say very carefully before I actually speak"
I'm more of a listener in 'real life' conversations, unless I know the person pretty well, but even then, I'm usually the quietest person there. ^ ^
"Anyway, writing is hard. =P"
Yes. X3
"Because his RL self is what got me liking him, but I caaaaan't write about that when the English fandom's not at that point yet!! D:"
omg, I wanna knowwwwwwww now what's made him so interesting to you. XD
"My writing is also fairly simple and not very heavy with detail or imagery... I can't write that way even if I want to! Some people can manage flowery prose but I'm just like... this happened. Then this. The end."
XDD I'm the saaaame; even if I try, it seems like it's forced and fake and then I take it out anyway.
"I am also guilty of getting into a series for the sake of reading fanfic about it."
I've been sucked into fandoms because I read crossover fanfics of that quite a lot of the time. XDD
"I don't do anything with it for that particular piece ... I do keep it in mind for my next writing project though."
Yeeeeah, same here. Even if I get something like 'there's something wrong with this sentence', I usually can't/don't change it because I don't know what to change it to.
Answer for 18: *____* Yeah, this is so true for me too.
I will eventually do this meme too when I have the time. XDD

Date: 2011-03-12 12:37 am (UTC)This week, I went ahead and posted things as I finished them even though I'm still not content with them since I have a deadline for 31_days and I don't want to end up posting them all on the 31st (or not posting them at all...). I wonder if it's better for me to just go ahead and post things without over-thinking things... because it seems that I've just ended up not posting things ever because of that. XD; Hm, I think for drabbles, I worry a bit less. But they're "complete", so I feel okay to post them like that, unlike longer fics. XD; (And now I have three new WIPs...haha...)
I'm very bad at letting go of my favorite characters. XD
It's been a long time since HgHd!
was it the amnesia that got you reading that fic, hahaBut this proves that fanfic is a good way of connecting with fandom, hehe.I can't write on paper since writing on paper doesn't allow me to go back over my sentences as easily, but maybe that would actually help me and force me to just move on already and save the editing until the whole thing's complete. I think your way is much more efficient? XD; And makes a lot more sense, since I always end up too attached to certain paragraphs that I can't take them out even when they should be taken out. :'D
I'm usually the quietest person too. ^^;; It's fine among friends but kind of awkward with other acquaintances who don't know me as well. Must be hard for them to get to know me. ^^;;
It'll still be awhile until we see Arctic Fox's RL self, but we're getting there. *___* I did already like him as he is in Second Life (and how he shadows Kenshin, eeee)... I guess he isn't all that different, but his RL self does add another dimension. XD
I seem to prefer reading fiction that isn't too heavy with detail and imagery too, like many young adult series. XD; Though, I do like admiring more complicated prose once in a while, as long as it's not too convoluted. Still... I can never write that way. XD
Crossovers do that! Though many times I end up reading the fics without knowing one of the series. XD
I think... this meme took me over 3,000+ words. XD

Date: 2011-03-28 08:15 pm (UTC)"Hm, I think for drabbles, I worry a bit less."
Same here. :3 I don't have to worry about consistency if it's short and it takes a lot less effort and time to review it. X3
"I'm very bad at letting go of my favorite characters. XD"
So long as I'm still in the fandom, I think it's pretty hard to shake me from my favourite character(s). But I guess that depends if other people get introduced later on (Kenshin and M-21 X3)
"It's been a long time since HgHd!"
It really has!
"
was it the amnesia that got you reading that fic, hahaI... actually don't know. XD;; I don't think I'd actually seen Hao in person (it took me a couple of years before I did) and hm. I think I might have liked the amnesiac part of it because I'd learn more about Hao as he discovered more about himself. :3
"I think your way is much more efficient?"
XD Not by much though.
"It'll still be awhile until we see Arctic Fox's RL self, but we're getting there. *___*"
\o/ Yeeeeeeey~! :D
Mine's was somewhere in that region too. XDD;

Date: 2011-03-30 12:56 am (UTC)M-21 was pretty much introduced from the start? XD; Sometimes though~, I like a series but don't get too attached to the characters until someone gets introduced later on. (And then the obsession sets in, hehe)
I can't believe how long it's been. 0____0;; (I've graduated three times since then, oh man~)
Hao in that story felt pretty much like an OC to me. XD; When someone asked me if I wanted to write a crossover with them (with me responsible for Hao), I think my reaction was that I couldn't write Hao. XD; Not the one we see in the series at least.
I'm getting to like scribbling on paper at least. XD
Why don't I have an icon of Arctic Fox... XDD

Date: 2011-04-11 11:05 am (UTC)But we didn't find out about his background until later, and he changed a lot from what he was like at the start. :3 Tao gets added to this list because he's just so... asdk XD He's so fun!
*thinks about it* Yeah, I was in high school while you were posting that too. o____o;
"Why don't I have an icon of Arctic Fox... XDD"
We've barely seen him! D:

Date: 2011-04-12 06:41 am (UTC)I was in high school back then too. :O Annnnd, I don't think my writing has improved much. >__>
I need to remedy that somehow. *needs an icon of Arctic Fox*

Date: 2011-04-12 06:35 pm (UTC)XDD Tao is the first non-serious character we've seen, isn't he? Apart from the lighthearted stuff at the start when Rai was learning about the world.
I think it has. :3

Date: 2011-04-13 07:23 am (UTC)I guess Tao would be the first non-serious character... among the people with power/in the know. XD; The kids are pretty silly most of the time. XD;
Well, my writing has improved in the way that I now agonize over things a lot more. XDDD And I've been trying out different styles. :D
