Hikaru no Go Heian game for the PS!

While browsing nicovideo.jp today, I came across someone's playthrough of this game. The entire game! All the voiced scenes! This game is way too hilarious...it's like an official fanfic where everyone's living in the Heian era. There are youkai running about. Youkai who want to play GO. Everyone plays go for some reason. Hikaru is Sai's guard. Akira is an onmyouji. Waya and Tsutsui and a bunch of other people are nobles. And so forth. Mind breaking stuff. I wish I had this game. The voices and images were great.

I took a bunch of screencaps because some of these are so pretty. <3



Hikaru gets sent to find Sai. Sai doesn't hear Hikaru because he's so focused on playing go.


Some of his customers start fighting. Haha, look who it is?


Sai's teaching people~


Ishiwara! :O He's a noble. Hikaru and Sai get called for some matter that both of them don't know anything about.


Akira appears! (kyaaaa) A bunch of people commented that he looks like Haku in this, haha. Akira is called "Kamo Akira" in this.


Akira's dad! Who is...not Akira's dad in this game. He's called Fujiwara no Kouyo in this. He calls Akira "Kamo-kun." How sad! Sai acts a bit weird around him. They have the same name...


The 'villains.' Sort of. LOL at evil looking Kurata. Apparently, Sai is called to play a go game on a board with some faraway youkai. (Yeah, youkai love go too.) The entire go board is played with black stones. Wherever the next hand is played is where youkai will appear next. Sai plays a move, Zama-sama plays a different move, saying that Sai played the wrong move.


Akira, Hikaru, and Sai go to the place Sai played to wait for the youkai. They meet these people in the streets!


Honda~


MITANI. And Kaga. The clothes fit both of them well! Kaga starts fighting with Akira.


Tsutsui steps in and stops their fighting. Good for Tsutsui. The youkai should be handled first! The youkai end up not appearing at the place Sai played...Sai goes home feeling dejected.


Depressed!Sai.


Hikaru has a brilliant idea to cheer Sai up. No, it's not molesting Sai. Hikaru offers to play a go game. He's never played before, but he knows Sai loves go.


After Hikaru plays Sai, a child comes in and Hikaru plays go with him too. (The child is Fuku, haha. Poor guy has no name here.) Hikaru loses...


Sai and Hikaru go back to the room with the go board. There is now one white stone among the black stones. Akira offers Sai a go stone and asks Sai to play the next move.


Sai accepts.


They head to the location where the youkai will appear. Akira gives Hikaru a sword to slay the youkai.


Hikaru takes the sword!


The youkai appears! Ahahahahaha. The youkai in this game are way too funny. Poor guys who got turned into youkai...


Hikaru slays the guy with a sword. (but you actually play go against him...) Sai successfully figured out where the youkai were appearing.


The next day, Hikaru and Sai run into Kouyo again, who introduces Ogata. :O


Hikaru runs into Isumi and Waya! (They both have different surnames) Waya calls Hikaru, "Hikaru." :O


Sai notices that some girls are waving to Hikaru. Turns out to be Akari no Kimi, Hikaru's childhood friend. Next to Akari is Nase no Kimi. So pretty~


Waya and Hikaru want to go to Ogata's hanami event, but you have to be invited to go. Luckily, both Isumi and Sai were invited, so Waya and Hikaru tag along (they just want the food). Sai's pretty reluctant to go for some reason and disappears for a long while. Hikaru tries to find him and runs into Kishimoto!! (who did not see Sai)


After Kishimoto left, Hikaru tried asking someone else, but he didn't see Sai either.


Isumi: "Ogata-sama ga ore wo miteiru." Ogata-sama is looking at me. (LOL!) The comments at Nicodouga exploded over this.


When Hikaru comes back from the entrance, he sees Isumi talking with Ogata. Hikaru finds it hard to cut in.


Kouyo arrives! He asks after Sai, but Hikaru doesn't know where he is. Kouyo is relieved just knowing that Sai had attended.


Waya found Sai for everyone. Sai was looking forlornly at the cherry blossoms.


They gather together to eat. (Saeki~~!!)


Hikaru loses sight of Sai again and discovers that Sai is talking with Ogata. Hikaru finds it hard to butt in here too.


At night time, they fight their next demon. Poor Morishita-sensei!! What happened to you...


Sai receives a puzzle in the form of a letter. It supposedly came from a beauty. Akari is totally excited over it and wants to decipher it to meet the "beauty." They drag Akira along (who doesn't want to go at all) and find Mitani who deciphers the puzzle for them. Mitani is totally excited over meeting this "beauty." When they go to the place, they end up meeting Ishikawa (who's not the person behind the letter, haha. Comments were flying about how that would be disappointing. People kept trying to guess who the "beauty" would be. Mitani's sister?). Ishikawa asks Akira something, and Akira gladly takes the chance to run away from what they were doing.


Hikaru calls it a day for the beauty searching. Hikaru and Sai find another youkai to beat up. Poor guy. Except, Hikaru loses.


Akira steps in to save the day. Hikaru needs to lose more so we can see scenes like this.


The next day, Hikaru sets out to find the beauty again. Sai doesn't want to go, but he needs a guard, so Akira uses that as a reason to drop out too. Mitani tags along with Hikaru and Akari. They head to a temple, beat the guy at go, and were then guided to the place where the beauty lived. And guess who the beauty ended up being...?


KANEKO. AHAHAHAHA. She's known as the "Heian beauty."


Mitani is very, very impressed. Man, this game wants people to ship Mitani x Kaneko.


Mitani blushes so much during these scenes!!


Anyway, back to serious business, Hikaru and the others are now battling the four mystical beasts. Suzaku, Genbu, all that.


This guy is up first.


This is the second guy.


They talk a bit.


And each have a cut scene of their own. :3


Third guy.




Morishita-sensei!! An upgrade from all those ugly youkai.


In the non youkai circle, Akari accidentally upset one of the nobles and is challenged to a 3 vs. 3 go match. Hikaru helps Akari find teammates. Sai helps them train for the match.


They win! Akari glomps Hikaru.


At night, they fight the last of the 4 beasts.


Last guy is this guy.


He tells you that there's one more person behind him.


Hikaru loses, so Akira saves the day again. So pretty~


Akira talks with Ogata.

After Sai tutored Akari and the others in the 3 vs. 3 match, a bunch of girls want Sai to teach them.


More girls. (are they originally from the Kaioh go club?)


Sai plays the last move but was called a traitor by Zama-sama, so they send these guy after Sai to catch Sai. I think. I don't remember what these caps are of...


More of the same...


DUN DUN DUN. Hikaru and Sai find the last boss, who is none other than Kuwabara! Everyone guessed it...


Kuwabara orchestrated the whole thing because he wanted to find the Hand of God.


When asked why he had to send youkai to terrorize the village, he said that this way, he can play go whenever he wanted.


Sai has a flashback. ...so Sai is Kouyo's child in this game. lkdjflas;dfa Child!Sai is really cute though.


SAAAAAAIIII. Anyway, Sai wins over Kuwabara.


Yay, happy scene.

You can play different routes in this game. The previous one was Akari's with the 3 vs. 3 match (I think). These next pics are from Akira's scenes.


Akira is possessed by something!


Kurata saves Hikaru.


Hikaru plays against possessed!Akira.


Hikaru wins and the possession ends.


The next day, Hikaru runs into Akira again and sees a female badgering him about being the one who saved her. Akira doesn't recall such a thing at all. Hikaru thinks she's probably making it up for the attention.


Hikaru drags Akira away to solve the mystery.


This is as close to official Hikaru x Akira as you can get. XDDD


Hikaru goes to the village and discovers that Kurata is the cause of part of the problem.


Ochi! He's uh, Akira's shikigami, I think. Poor guy doesn't talk in this game at all...


Hikaru confronts Akira and tells him that Akira has no friends. Akira is very, very angry, but they manage to talk things out.

Akira says that his shikigami are like family to him because he has no other family. But, he must learn to let go, so he sets Ochi free. Yeah.

And so, they're friends again!

The player (as Hikaru) has to play go against the demons to win against them. One has to wonder what his sword is for! The go board is one of the smaller kinds though...I think, 9x9?

I'm terrible with names, but I was watching the scenes with running commentary on nicovideo, where whenever someone appeared, everyone keysmashed their name. XDDD It's so fun watching stuff on nicovideo.

They all have pretty scenes! It's so cool to see Akira in those clothes doing that pose. XDD

I wouldn't be able to play it either, go wise. I would totally lose at all the go games! I wonder if it's all right to lose though, since both times that this player has lost, Akira stepped in and defeated the youkai for Hikaru, and the story went on. The Japanese part is all right though, since it's all voiced!

The story line is so full of crack. XD; At the end, Hikaru makes an offhand mention about how Sai would wait 1000 years or however long for Go that made this game feel like a prequel. I guess they were trying to tie the game in somewhat logically. XD

I keep giggling over Akira and how he was called "Kamo-kun." Kamo Akira...

Hi there! That's a random place to find this journal, though I guess I commented there? :3 Aren't these pictures so pretty? I love how everyone looks in Heian era clothes. The game itself was pretty fascinating too, what with youkai interested in go. XD;

This game makes me want to look up other Hikago games too to see if they're just as interesting. I've always skipped over Hikago games since I don't understand go at all. ^^

I swapped my header very quickly when I knew of the new art for the complete edition. The covers are so pretty. I didn't do anything to make the header match the greenness of the rest of my layout though, but oh well. It's still pretty! This game is a PS1 game. I don't know when it was released though. The graphics are pretty nice for a PS1 game...I guess it's not too intense since it's mostly just still screens. :3 So much of it is voiced though! That must have taken a lot of space on the game disc. Such a pretty game~

So good to see so many of my favorite side characters cameo'd!

I lol'd greatly over the glasses--all hooked on by loops of string(?) over the ears. I wonder if there were any Heian-era spectacles of that sort? Even if so, Ogata's frames are a complete anachronism, but I love them anyway.

Thank you for all the screencaps! The game looks super pretty. ^^ It's really great to see some of the more minor characters featured in this as well. And they all look far less ridiculous in Heian era clothing than I had previously imagined. The image of evil Kurata and Kuwabara was awesome though. xD As someone has already said, the storyline of the game sounds absolutely hilarious. xD

I kind of wish I could play this game as well, except all the Japanese dialogue would just confuse me a lot.

It was so much fun listening to the seiyuu in these scenarios too! A lot of characters appear in this, though some of them aren't named in the game. Poor Ochi doesn't even get to speak. I like how Akira looks in the clothing. Hikaru would look more natural in Heian clothing if his hair weren't bleached. XD

a late beyond late reply, but... i've just rediscovered these screencaps as well as your scans of the complete volumes, and i really can't express my delight properly in words. ^_^ my hard drive died about eight months ago, and i lost allll my images and everything (well, i do have the hng manga on disk somewhere...) so this is a huge, huge boon to find these. i've been so slow in rebuilding what i lost... eheh. ^_^

(I want to get this game now... which is complete nonsense, as a) I don't play go, b) I don't know Japanese, and c) I don't have playstation... but of course, how would that stop me from wanting this...)

That picture is this one where Hikaru and the others went out on the street after Sai received the letter. Strange that it's now blank!

Icons would be lovely! :) I made some myself too since everyone in Heian garb is so much awesomeness.

I don't know how to play go, or else I'd have snatched up the game. But I think the game does allow the story to advance even if you lose the go matches. Which I'd be doing all the time! Ah, not having a Playstation would make playing the game even harder, and you'd need a Playstation that can play Japanese games too.

Hey, I thought I might stop by again to thank you for this post, as it gave me some inspiration for one Heian age fic I'm writing. (I mean, among other things, Kamo no Akira! Of course.)

And... if I may ask one question, about nicovideo... I finally took the time to figure out how to make an account there and watch videos, but there seems to be this annoying Japanese text going over the videos... do you know if there's a way to get rid of that? Or is it just because I've got the basic account (or whatever it's called), so that the only way to get rid of it is, I don't know, pay monies?

A Heian Hikago fic! That sounds quite awesome. And I agree, Kamo no Akira is just priceless.

For nicovideo, there's an option on the bottom right (I think it's on the bottom right) that looks like a speech bubble. If you click on that, it'll make the comments go away! The text running across the top is by other users. They're displayed at the timestamp of where people make their comments. I find them quite fun to read, but I do turn them off whenever I need to make screencaps.

And thanks! So that's what it's all about. Glad I asked, it was confusing me a lot... I bet those would be fun to read, but as I can just read the hiragana and a handful of the easiest kanji, I don't get that much out of them...

Haha, that happens to me a lot too! Titles are hard.

I find the comments enjoyable since I can mostly understand them (though they do go by very quickly). It's particularly fun to see people's reactions to certain scenes. But if you can't read the comments, then I guess they're quite obstructing! I think some English streaming sites have also launched something similar (comments flying by at the time stamp they're made) but I'm not too familiar with that.
