I had a terrible day today at work (...I ended up in tears), but coming home and opening up my email to two wonderfully detailed reviews for an old fic really brightened up my day.
So, thank you, Ale. ♥ I don't know if you'll see this, but thank you. You put a smile on my face. It was great reading your thoughts. Your comments also made me realize some things about my own writing and interests.
Ale mentioned liking my sense of humor. This made me go "huh" in a mind blowing way! One, because I'm not very humorous in person (so I'm pleased that the fic came off as having a good balance of humor among other stuff), and two, because I thought I'd only more recently started writing humorous fics. I guess that's not true, considering I wrote HgHd nine years ago... So it's not a recent thing even though I've only recently been labeling my fics with the humor label.
Haha, I guess my interests haven't really changed.
I do feel this has to do with how I like writing fics that are of a similar genre to the original canon... Since liking those genres is why I liked reading/watching the original canon in the first place. Series with a good dose of well-placed humor always had a special place in my heart, even nine years ago. (Seriously, has it really been nine years since I wrote Hoshi ga Hoshii desu?!! I really haven't grown as a writer... In some areas, I've regressed...). Even now, I mostly turn to series with a good dose of humor, and since I do like writing closely to the genre of the canon, it's no wonder my fics are leaning towards being humorous. I am pleased that people are finding my fics humorous since I worry that my writing might fall flat. I sometimes can't tell if what I'm writing is funny to everyone, or if it's just me, haha...
The humor is what draws me to many series in the first place, like Legend of Sun Knight, Noblesse, 1/2 Prince, Kimi to Boku, Oresama Teacher, Gyakuten Saiban, and Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo. These series have really great humor, never failing to bring a smile to my face, and then in the next moment, they can leave me with heartache, haha. I do like emotional stories, but I like them balanced with some humor, because really, when I turn to fiction, I'm looking to feel good.
Which is why my fics rarely turn out full of angst (not even during the journey). However, I do feel that I need to work on writing believable obstacles more because I tend to make things too easy for the characters.
Another point that was brought up was the family stuff. This thread didn't surprise me, since I'm quite aware that I really enjoy fiction about family. I read a lot of stories that focus on family, though I don't seem to be writing it much currently since what I'm writing at the moment is mostly LSK. Granted, I do think of Grisia as someone who considers many people to be his brothers. They might not be related by blood, but they are closer than many families out there. (And that's what makes me like them so much <333)
Anyway, I should get back to preparing for work before I fall asleep... Wish I could be writing fic instead! (I only have around 1k words of the Pope oneshot. Wish I could write more!!!)
