Hm, for books, I suppose it's because it's all text instead of visuals (which are easier to tell right away whether it's graphic or not?).
I was particularly confused about how the movie The King's Speech was rated R in the US! Meaning people under 17 can't go see it. I thought it would be graphic or something, but turns out there was a scene were he swore a lot, and that was it. =/
I think my labeling for my fics should be safe. I usually label things with swearing higher. But... *rereads the ffnet rating guide* I think I should label everything at least a T. Because I generally think PG-13 would cover everything, but dang, T is only up to age 9...
