domain?

I bought a domain last week, hosted on dreamhost. The description says, "It will probably take 1-3 days for your domain to begin to work as the new dns information propagates across the Internet!" It's been...a week now and it's still not working. Should I just wait some more? ): Am I supposed to do anything? How does this work anyway? (and if I want to move hosts later on but keep my domain name, is that possible? Will there be some downtime between moving?)
