[Legend of Sun Knight] fic: The View Through the Window (oneshot)
Title: The View Through the Window
Fandom: The Legend of Sun Knight
Words: 1149
Summary: All he ever thought of when he heard the word "mother" was the view he would see on cold evenings, a narrow window with the mother's back turned on him. But now, things were different. He had Teacher, suspicious uncle he may be.
Notes: Happy Mother's Day! :) This is based on 39 LSK. This is set very soon after the 39th generation was selected. Spoilers for the 39th gen, but I kind of don't remember all the details, so pardon any inconsistencies. :'D
When it first happened to Valica, he was completely shocked. Sure, he'd heard others accidentally slip up in front of their teachers before, and later he'd even read about it in books, but Valica never thought it would happen to him too.
Unlike many of the others, he had never even known his mother. He didn't at all know what mothers were supposed to be like. He didn't even think of Elaro as an older brother until Elaro told him that the Holy Temple is his family, the Leaf Knight his father, Elaro his older brother, and Ludia his older sister.
The point was, Valica didn't know the comfort of a family. He and "mothers" were worlds apart. All mothers ever did was chase Valica away from their trash cans. All he ever thought of when he heard the word "mother" was the view he would see on cold evenings, a narrow window with the mother's back turned on him.
I'm hungry, Valica would think. Won't you spare me some food?
They never spared him even a second glance.
With everyone on vacation and the teachers out on a mission, the loneliness of the Holy Temple gnawed at Valica so much that tears fell on the tenth day. He had tried and tried to keep them at bay, but he was not strong enough. It was like he had returned to the time when no one acknowledged his existence, where he was on the other side of the window and could only look on helplessly. He was an outsider. He didn't belong. If not for Elaro, Valica thought he would have been swallowed by his loneliness and self-doubt.
But Brother Elaro said the Holy Temple was his family.
Could he really think of the Holy Temple as his?
Valica knew that his teacher would eventually return. It wasn't like Teacher was going to abandon him. Valica knew this, but he couldn't stop feeling uneasy. Every day, he would gaze up at his teacher's closed door and know that no one was behind it.
There was no soup waiting for him, no smile, no pat on the head.
When his teacher finally returned from his mission, weary and unkempt, Valica didn't dare hope that his teacher would spare time for him. At least, not right away. There was paperwork to take care of, meetings to attend, sleep to catch up on, plenty of things more important than Valica.
His teacher proved him wrong.
Worried, his teacher bent down and ruffled his hair.
"How have you been? Have you been eating enough? Did anyone bully you while I was gone?" his teacher rambled.
Valica smoothed his hair down, but inside, his emotions weren't as easily smoothed over. I missed you, Teacher. I was so lonely. You won't leave me, will you? I can stay, right?
Though he had always been afraid to cling too much to his teacher, he found his hand reaching out to tug on the corner of his teacher's shirt, all of his emotions threatening to spill out. But all he blurted was, "Teacher, I'm hungry!"
The Leaf Knight made soup with the utmost haste, as if his life depended on it. He brandished his jars of seasoning like one might toss flying daggers. In no time at all, a bowl of steaming soup sat in front of Valica, and his teacher pulled out a chair to rest.
Valica blew on the soup. It was still nearly scalding when he lifted the spoon to his mouth. Tongue burning, he flicked his watering eyes up to study his teacher.
His teacher was falling asleep in his chair, figure slumped forward, arm propped on the table to support his head. His hair was a mess; there were even twigs sticking out of it. He really should have gone to take care of himself first. Valica wasn't important. Yet when Valica brought the spoon to his mouth, this time much more carefully, his teacher sat up just a bit straighter, a beaming smile coming over his face.
Teacher was always like this. He always looked super happy watching Valica eat. At first, Valica had thought his teacher to be a suspicious uncle -- there were lots of grownups like that who tricked little kids -- and Valica had indeed been tricked.
He had totally been tricked. The promise of soup had been all it'd taken. He thought he was going to be dedicating his life to the Church of the God of Light as the next Leaf Knight, and he was, but more than that, he had this.
His teacher sat across from him, watching him fondly. Valica never thought he could have this, that he would be at the table, being taken care of. He had always thought it to be merely a view through the window, one he could never be part of. A pretty picture, but useless.
Yet here he was.
Teacher rambled off, like he was wont to do. Valica let his teacher's words wash over him, already used to his teacher's ways. He ate his soup contently.
In the midst of his rambling, Valica's teacher asked, "Would you like more soup?"
That was when Valica absentmindedly replied, "Sure, mama."
Both of them blinked. Valica had heard others slip up before, but he had never thought he would. The spoon dropped, and Valica hurriedly tried to correct his mistake. "I-I said, sure, Teacher!"
But his teacher would have none of that. With a huge grin on his face, his teacher came over to his side of the table and ruffled his hair.
"You are the sweetest, Valica. I'm so glad I chose you!"
Valica smoothed his hair down once more. His heart was still pounding hard, but a shy smile came across his face. He was glad that his teacher hadn't minded the slip.
More than a father, like what Brother Elaro had claimed the Leaf Knight was to Valica, he thought that maybe...
Maybe this was what having a mother who cared should feel like.
Unbeknownst to Valica, his teacher took great pride in being accidentally called, "mama."
"He called me 'mama'!" Elmairy exclaimed during the meeting where they were supposed to discuss the mission they had just completed.
Ceo smiled. "Ah, has Valica finally slipped up too? About time!"
Elmairy nodded. "Yes! Now you can't boast anymore that Shuis called you mommy!"
"Dear brothers, Sun is deeply touched that both of you possess the greatest benevolence of all, the love of a mother," Grisia snickered, since Elaro had never slipped and called him mother before. It was about time that Elmairy got called it! Grisia was surprised it hadn't happened earlier.
Both of them immediately turned the tables on him.
"Oho? Don't forget the time when Elaro kept calling you 'Big Sister'!" Ceo said.
"Sun, jealousy doesn't suit you," Elmairy said with a frown. "Don't worry, the only reason Elaro hasn't called you mother is because he's much older than the rest. I'm sure he thinks you're motherly."
Grisia slammed the table. "Only the two of you want to be thought of as motherly!"
the end
I just really wanted to have someone slip up and call one of them "mom." |D;;
I suppose this would have worked with the 37th/38th gen too, but I thought it'd work best with Elmairy (because he's just so motherly~~... Well, except for his brief stint as a suspicious uncle, hahahahah).
*gives Valica a hug*
Happy Mother's Day! :'D

Happy Mother's Day! :'D
Awww
Ahhhhhhhhhhh Valica you adorable thing <333
*glomps the little knights*
Good job Elmairy. You have successfully gotten rid of the weird uncle image <3
Shuis called Ceo mother too?! XD I'd like to know how that happened ahahhaa
(Does that make Roland daddy? //bricked)
It's okay Grisia. Just wait until Hungri calls Lesus dad. Then you'll automatically be the mom...
Re: Awww
Hahaha, from weird uncle to mommy. Good leveling up. XD;;
It totally happened when they were dyeing each other's hair. *nods* Shuis got a hold of Ceo's pretty locks~~ (Did Roland get to see Shuis before he came to the Holy Temple? Maybe Shuis has some memory of him. |D;;; Then again, Roland would've had a different appearance...)
XDD!! I'm imagining Lesus lifting Hungri to his shoulders (like that one drawing that J.U. drew!) and going, "Higher! Higher, Daddy!"
Once he realizes his slip, he goes quiet (but Lesus has a small, secretive smile). Then, Grisia walks by, and to make up for his own embarrassment, Hungri decides to embarrass Grisia instead. He doesn't realize right away that by calling Grisia "mom," he is actually helping Lesus and Grisia along in their relationship. XD;;; Then, Grisia retaliates that Lesus has such a cheeky daughter, which causes another argument/stare off between them (Grisia and Hungri). Lesus sighs, stuck in the middle, though he is somewhat resigned to the fact that what they're actually doing is fighting over him.
(Grisia, you shouldn't be fighting with a kid XDD)
Re: Awww
ahhhh Hungriiiiiiiii <33333
*OMG that J.U. illustration... Such daddy-look*
OMG Hungri calling Grisia mom.... and that fight ahahahah. Dear God of Light... ahhhh <3 <3 <3
Yup yup, Lesus-daddy has such a childish wife, and a very cheeky daughter too. At least his future son-in-law will be much less a handful.
no subject
(PS imagine Grisia calling Neo "mum" though. Adopting the habit of whining "But muuuuum...!" whenever Neo gives him some annoying task)
no subject
Ahhhhh, Grisia calling Neo that would be cuteness. I can see Grisia being quite innocent and accidentally saying that in the beginning, and then he catches on that this is a great way to annoy Neo. XDD;;;;
Neo: Grisia keeps complaining, 'But Moooom! Lesus doesn't have to do any of that!' Why is he calling me Mom? It should at least be Dad!
Chasel: (Is that the point here...) Neo, maybe it's time you reevaluated your teaching methods-
Neo: It's like he's a rebellious teenager! Always complaining about everything! 'But Mom! This is the 38th time you've slacked off with your paperwork! But Mom! The king wants you to complete the mission in a fortnight!
Chasel: ...Neo, you're a terrible mother.
Neo: Right? I'm no mother!
Chasel: ...You make me wonder who exactly the mother is here...
(Neo probably thinks if anyone, Chasel should get called mommy. *nods*)
no subject
Wahahaha! Neo is indeed a terrible mother. That's not what he expected when Grisia said he wished for family... Though the first time he calls him "mom" he'd probably panic, haha |D "Oh no, teacher's going to hack me to pieces!"
Grisia: *mumbles* Yes, mom...
Neo: ...What was that?
Grisia: I-I said 'Yes, da- Teacher'! 'Teacher'!
And then ducking his head while Neo just gives him a weird look because he really physically had not quite heard what he said. Thus giving Grisia the notion that 'maybe Teacher won't kill me even if I call him mom'.
no subject
That is cuteness.
CUTENESS.
Hahaha, Grisia thinking maybe his teacher won't kill him. XDD; (NOoooo Grisia, he just has bad hearing!)
now I have time
Graaah, I feel so sorry for little pre-selection Valica! QAQ The same way I do for little Charlotte. Aaaah, street children. Even if I don't know how much of it is canon for Valica past "orphan"... He was a street kid who was picked up and later sent to the Storm Knight selections (but was snatched by suspicious uncle Elmairy through the power of soup) or something, I think? Only reading a summary once doesn't make me too sure on matters on the long run :'D
(I can't even keep his name. Well maybe now... I just learned Lanbi's name, too! You should see my amount of "WHAT WAS PAPA STORM'S NAME AGAIN" tweet, ahaha |D)
/What even are Grisia & co. doing on their
brotherly family bonding timemissions/The meaning of the Holy Temple as their family to an orphan kid aaaaaaah. aside from being basically the driving force of the entire LSK main story I just looooove this kind of thing. The I AM CRY kind of way. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah so aaaaaah QAQ <3333
Noooo poor Valica, you are important uvu let Mama Elmairy show you~~~
/Why are all Leaf Knights so adorable. I know you are Leaf Knights but look at Georgo being an Earth Knight/ (not like I'm complaining tho aaaaaaaa)
Elmairy marry me
if I can't marry Lesus*dissolves into 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah's rereading this story*
Cranky-looking little Shuis calling Ceo 'mommy' must be the cutest thing in this entire story though |D <333 And Ceo boasting about it! Though I couldn't help pondering "didn't he technically compare you to a princess naive enough to trust an angry Grisia tho" after reading this-
Re: now I have time
(/keeps spoiling people to the end of time OTL. Let's see if Kiyu and I can work Elaro into A Slice of Wedding Cake without spoiling people too badly, hahahahaha)
Yup, yup. Valica was living on the streets before he was caught by a bread shop owner (I really want to make the connection to Ecilan's family...!! Would be kind of a neat coincidence...). He was 7 when he was sent to the orphanage, and he only stayed there for a year before he went to the selections. So young~~~ Getting selected at eight years old! It really makes me wonder what all the other kids at the Leaf Knight selection were like for Elmairy to want to choose Valica so much. (I know Valica totally tugged on Elmairy's heart strings, but still!!! To discard all the other children like that! And to be so suspicious while he did it!)
I refer to "When Teacher Wasn't Yet Teacher" for the list of names for the 37th gen. XDDDD Unfortunately, it's still quite an incomplete list. So for the 37th gen that don't have names, I write them out of my stories, hahaha, by making them not live in Leaf Bud City.
Papa Storm ahhhhhh. Lanbi~~~~
YES YES YES. I just... can't get over the Holy Temple as a family. It's really what made me love LSK as much as I do. The teachers and their students (who are a lot like their children), and the holy knights as brothers to each other~~~. Grisia indeed gained a lot of brothers, just like he wanted.
Don't worry, Valica will eventually grow into himself. |D;; I really love that he's actually fairly outgoing, I feel, yet he's a book lover, kind of the opposite sort from Demos~~ (I imagine that he must hang out in the library from time to time though. I wonder if he's on good terms with Cloud).
"didn't he technically compare you to a princess naive enough to trust an angry Grisia tho"
LMAO
(i very much want a princess AU hahahahahah. or, undercover as a princess. that works too)
Re: now I have time
(YEESSSSSS please do! I have been hoping for dear Elaro to show up from the beginning! Just worrying you might leave him out for less spoilers. But !!!! dear Elaro !!!!!!)
Ooooh, Ecilan's family! I didn't even think of that! Ohoho, that's a nice idea. There are so many young kids in the 39th gen! While 38th gen seemed to be pretty consistently picked of 12-year-olds. And now we've got all those kids named by Grisia, and even Awaitsun's and Alice's second(!!)-born kid! (counting the older twins as one) And then there's Elaro, haha. Guys, what were all of you thinking when picking your children!
Maybe the other Leaf Knight candidates were all rotten eggs like what Chasel had to deal with... but then again, why would they go for Leaf Knight of all things? Judgment or Metal sound like a much more fun position if you're out to play with your power, hm. Who knows. He probably just decided to keep him on a whim... :'D
I refer to all 36th gen as 'papas' while 38th are the 'children' xD Only Neo went right from 'Teacher' to 'Neo'. Aside from Neo, for some reason Wen's name stuck with me the quickest... followed by Chasel and Fahr. I always tend to forget Eller's existance and Lanbi took ages to stick, and I always forget Metal and when I read his first name I get confused like "who was that again"... if there were any others mentioned yet, I just forgot about them completely, ahaha. |D
I just thought, seeing who Shuis' actual mother is... then again, Ceo had been naive enough to trust Grisia into doing him "one little favor" and look where it got him |D;;;
(these men will never get rid of the dresses anymore, will they xD Hm... The Knight (Roland) saves the Princess (Ceo) from the clutches of the Evil Wizard ((dark) Grisa) AU.... *coughs* this reminds me of the LSK-based children's picture book concept "Roland, the little Knight" I thought up during worktime once......)
Lovely!
(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Lovely!
I'm glad I made it in time. :D
Cuteness overload
Valica is just too adorable. Pfft! Leaf and Storm like to be called Mama!
Ice should also be a mama. (Now I'm wondering what the young Ice Knight is like. How close would he be to Sun? Ice is Sun's baking wife after all. And what about Hungri? Daddy Judgment and Mommy Sun- Sun did name him (hehe, Lesus was even there at the time!))
Re: Cuteness overload
Ice should totally join in with them! :D The mother's club! The 39th gen with his rosy cheeks~~ If he's not mad at Sun for his name, maaaybe he'll actually get along with Sun. He seemed like a nice, responsible kid who didn't care too much about his name, unlike Hungri, hahaha.
(I'd really like to see Judge and Absenplum bond, lolololol. And they should go off and find Meetin, if she's around)
Re: Cuteness overload
The mother's club! OMG! I think 6 out of 12 Holy Knights would be good mothers. But if there’s a mothers club then shouldn’t there be a father’s club too? Ah! My imaginations running wild now with all the possibilities, like what they do in there club, what they talk about (gossip), competitions between them, group trips, ect, ect.
Yu Wo hasn’t shown us the 39th gen characters yet, has she? (Like picture-wise?) Wait, what’s the young Ice Knight’s name? And when will we get the next 39th gen translation?!
Judge, Absenplum, Meetin! I love Yu Wo’s naming sense. You can’t get better than that!
Oh and LJ says it’s your birthday, so Happy Birthday!
Re: Cuteness overload
jkdf;saf;sa A mother's club and a father's club. Who would be in which club~~? Or maybe there'd be some crossover between the clubs. :D
There are a few pictures! Sun, Judgment, Storm, Leaf. None of the others yet. The young Ice Knight's name is Absenplum. XD;;
Thanks~~~ :D /goes off to eat cake
Re: Cuteness overload
Father’s Club: Earth, Blaze, Judgment, Stone
Could be in either: Sun (trying to be nice to Sun here but he totally belongs in the Mother's Club), Moon (Fashion? Girly or gay, either way, he could be a mother or daddy in my eyes), Metal (I saw the picture with him and roses, ‘nough said), Hell (Eh... he’s good with children)
Aww, I’ve already seen those ones, was hoping there were more pics out there. And why wouldn’t the young Ice Knight like his name? Plum? Sounds delish! His teacher could bake a plum pie and name it after him. Sun is so good at naming.
Hungri is my favorite name from the series. I was thinking of naming a pet after him.
(If I wasn’t so busy over the past month, I so would have gotten you a present. Next year I’ll be more prepared. Hope the cake was good!)
Re: Cuteness overload
I'm hoping more of the 39th gen will be drawn for the next two volumes!!! I haven't seen any drawings surface yet though... Maybe this means v2 is still very far off. Usually J.U. seems to at least plurk some sneak illustrations? She was plurking Elaro and Hungri sketches way before the release of the volume...
I think Absenplum was quite fine with his name. XD;; I wonder if we'll get an official version of his name though, like Hungri's~~
It's the thought that counts~~~ :D (Since mother's day just passed, we still had a cake from then... So no birthday cake, unfortunately! I did get a personal slice though. XD;;)
