NG Life
I finished reading NG Life over the weekend. I've been buying a volume here and there from Book Off and filling in my missing volumes at Kinokuniya until I bought all 9 volumes (I didn't even know volume 9 was the end... I thought it was still ongoing!). I read volumes 1-2 way back and wasn't too interested, but this time around, I was hooked. XD;
The main character, Keidai, remembers his past life, especially his past love, Serena. He's found his best male friend again in this life, except he's reincarnated as a girl. The series starts off with Keidai meeting his past love, except... she's reincarnated as a guy. XD; It's a romantic comedy, but there were lots of touching moments too. Keidai is fairly "handsome" but is an idiot most of the time. XD; Still, he's quite tormented by his memories since neither Serizawa (his best friend) and Yuuma (his past lover) remember anything from their past lives. On top of that, their genders are now different. This throws Keidai off a lot. Later on, there are some more explorations with exactly why he still has his memories.
So, I stopped during my first read because of 1) the play (it seemed so arbitrary at first) and 2) Shinogu's introduction. While Shinogu's a handsome guy in this life, he used to be Serena's vicious, overprotective older sister in his past life. I didn't like his character at all even though he also still had his memories. >_> I was fascinated that Keidai met someone else who still had their memories (Keidai was overcome with emotion for having his memories proven real!), but Shinogu was... meh for me. Up until this point though, the story seemed to be pretty random, with jokes here and there about Keidai and his conflict over Yuuma's resemblance to Serena.
But then things started happening in the third volume!
I also never would've thought I'd end up liking Shinogu so much later on. He was especially cute when he met Aglaia again. And his meeting with Mikage was so hilarious with him not knowing that Mikage also remembers the past, and with Mikage having strange glimpses of Shinogu with breasts from memories of the past. Shinogu's attempts to stop Mikage from joining the rest of the group....pft!! I can't get enough of that chapter. It wasn't until Shinogu and Mikage were side by side in the same panel that I realized Shinogu isn't actually that tall. :O (Or maybe Mikage is too tall). I so ship these two even though Mikage already loves someone else. XDDD
Shinogu isn't nearly as strong as he looks. He also cares a great deal about Yuuma and Shuna. I really loved how out of the three characters who remembers their past lives, he was the one who saw Yuuma and Shuna for who they were now in the present. He never tried to force their past on either of them. So thoughtful!
I also really liked Mikage. XD; Mostly because he's that misunderstood antagonist (but not really an antagonist). I also like characters with long ponytails. XDD
...after all this, I haven't talked about the main characters. Serizawa I really liked. She was strong and cheerful and so cute~. She had a lot of cute scenes. I loved how supportive and understanding she was. I also adored her past life as Loleus. Loved his physical appearance, his back story, and his personality. <333 I wanted to see how Serizawa and Keidai first met and I wanted to see more of Loleus. The mangaka delivered with both. XDD
Yuuma I didn't care too much about. For me, he was kind of just there. I was a bit scared for him when he started gaining his memories as Serena. He was always kind of mysterious and out of the loop. I'm glad he never decided he "needed to know everything". I can't imagine how he would cope with sudden memories of a past life. For the others (Keidai, Mikage, and Shinogu), they've always known about their past life, so their past selves kind of shaped who they are now. It would be different for Yuuma.
I reaaally wanted Shuna to regain her memories of her past life. It's too bad she never did. I know that she discarded her memories because she had no need for them and she wanted to live in the present, but even so, it's still sad for Mikage because now he's the only one who remembers all the history they shared. If not for their shared memories of their past lives (and their "hatred" of each other), their meeting in this life would have been so different. I quite adored how Shuna met Mikage in this life when she was only 10.
Even Keidai's dad grew on me. XD; I thought it was pretty random how Keidai's parents were his previous-sister and his previous-rival, but it was fun seeing Keidai yell at them about not getting his permission before marrying. How must if feel to know that your used-to-be younger sister gave birth to you? 0___0;;
I didn't like Reina at first, but she grew on me too!
I loved the plot later on about how they were starting to lose their memories of the past. It would be liberating indeed for them, but also very sad... even I was feeling lonely! I felt Keidai's anguish so clearly...
Hm, I have plunnies for this series. XD; Maybe I'll write something for
31days_exchange if I can make it in time for March. I want to explore what might happen if one of the characters who don't remember anything suddenly remembers something. What would happen to their current self?
I think it'd be particularly interesting if Serizawa were to suddenly remember her past as a guy. It'd sure throw a curve ball in her relationship with Keidai.
I've also been reading two other reincarnation series, Oyayubihime Infinity (a group of people have butterfly tattoos. when their tattoos touch, they see a part of their past. throughout the series, they try to figure out who they were) and Yukarism (a writer was born with recollections of his past as a female). I started all of these because they're labeled as genderbenders. :3 I think I'll probably start Bokura no Kiseki next. XD

I'm also reading Yukarism. Too bad it doesn't update much.
Re: Ahh!!
I've read a lot more of Yukarism since I wrote this post. I like the series. :) It still feels like it's in the beginning stages though. I just bought volumes 1 & 2, and I've been kept guessing and who's who from the past. Can't wait to find out~.
Re: Ahh!!
Yeah, I've been following Yukarism since I first found out about it, but I can't read Japanese, so I have to wait for the english translations to come. I can't wait to find out why and how everyone died.
Re: Ahh!!
The scanlations of Yukarism are pretty current. I bought volume 2 hoping I would get some more, but it ends where the scanlations end. :3
Do you read many other series with reincarnation? I also recently bought Ouji to Majou to Himegimi to, but only just volume 1, so not much has happened yet.
Re: Ahh!!
Aye, I don't read much manga anymore because I am tired of waiting for the english translations. Most reincarnation series are not complete so I won't start them. :p Yukarism was different because I read that right after I was done with NG Life, so I wasn't really out of my "past lives are so cool" phase. I used to watch Yu-Gi-Oh, though, if that counts. xD
Re: Ahh!!
I haven't watched very far with Yu-Gi-Oh. XD; NG Life is my favorite out of all the reincarnation stories I've read. :) I see that you're reading Akatsuki no Yona? I've been following that as well~
Re: Ahh!!
Don't get me started on Akatsuki no Yona. OhmyGOSH. Mizuho Kusanagi is like one of my favorite mangaka. I always follow her stories.
Re: Ahh!!
Ooo, have you also read Game x Rush then? :3
I wonder how long Akatsuki no Yona will end up being. I've been enjoying the developments. Some of the later characters are quite interesting. :) And well, Hak and Yoon are both so adorable.
Re: Ahh!!
I hope Akatsuki no Yona finishes soon, to me it seems that it's dragging on... Hak and Yoon are my favorite! :D
Re: Ahh!!
Ah, I don't think the scanlations have gotten around to the dragons yet? There's quite a lot of story still to come. :3
