Romance RPG, The Flower of Animosity/Black Flower

I've been reading some of Yu Wo's other works. Why are they all so fascinating? These two aren't 1st person, unlike 1/2 Prince and Legend of Sun Knight. There's not much talk about these even on Yu Wo's forums since Romance RPG is pretty old and short. I don't know about The Flower of Antimony though, since it's still being published at the moment, much like No Hero and LSK.

Summary and some thoughts under the lj-cuts.

This is one of her older works, and it's only one volume long and pretty straightforward. Lin Jian Yi is a handsome actor who has a foul mouth and a terrible temper, resulting in him scaring away eight girlfriends and six of his managers. His friend introduces him to an antique shop to help solve his problem. (Kind of reminds me of Petshop of Horrors/xxHolic) He comes out of the shop with an old NES system that's his own, and then he starts playing an RPG...

In the RPG, he becomes a talking sword. (The second character in his name means "sword". Thought that was funny since it's not a common character to have for a name. Didn't think he'd actually turn into a sword!) He's told it's a simulation game, and it looks like his job is to transform the ugly girl in front of him. The story follows him in RL where he deals with his new manager who looks more like a female ghost and in the game where he's a talking, foul-mouthed sword helping a girl meet her prince.

This was a fun read, and I quite liked the main character despite his foul mouth. :D It's a fairly lighthearted story.

The Flower of Animosity/Black Flower

Sample on Yu Wo's site

First, I'm not too sure what this title should translate to, but the title is the main character's name. At one point of the story, he introduces himself as a "male flower" but people mistake him and call him two characters in Chinese that sound very similar to "male flower" but is not. I've seen his name written as "Black Flower" in English on drawings of him, but that doesn't hold the same meaning... I'm also not sure where I got "The Flower of Animosity" from, but I thought I saw it on one of the covers...

(*coughs* I started reading this because people were talking about whether or not they can choose Black Flower as their favorite "female" character...made me curious what they meant.)

Anyway, this story follows the story of a flower. He is a male flower who was born to protect the Leaf, except he was born when their tree was about to die. When the Leaf desert their tree for another continent, they leave Flower behind because when trees die, flowers always go crazy and die afterward.

Left behind, Flower gets captured by humans and displayed in shows since he's not human and doesn't have human reproduction systems. When his tree dies, however, he goes berserk and ends up killing all the humans in the village. Once he becomes lucid again, he wanders away but is brought back by Owen, a kind warrior who was sent to investigate what happened to the village. Owen and his lover raise Flower since Flower doesn't know anything, not even how to talk. They think he's a girl because of his appearance, so they raise him as a girl. From them, Flower learns how to talk and becomes quite human, but all the while, Owen's friend is searching for the culprit who wiped out the entire village. Owen's friend's little brother Kasi befriends Flower in the meantime, and Flower promises that he'll always protect Kasi...

...tragedy in the making, right? It's like a trainwreck. T____T;; It's so heartwarming reading about Flower's trials at learning things (really reminds me of Sunshine, but even more clueless than him), but it was super evident that that wasn't going to last at all.

Seems like Yu Wo was trying to be anti Yu Wo with this work of hers, challenging herself to write something she normally doesn't write. The story still reads a lot like her other stories though, and a lot of elements in the story reminds me of 1/2 Prince and LSK even though this story is dark. This is a pretty fascinating read though... I can't put it down. I want to find out what happens to Flower. ;____;

After the intro, the story jumps in time a lot and then uses flashbacks to fill out the story. That set me back a bit. The time jump was a bit hard to get used to at first, but I feel it's also pretty fascinating to see what changes time brings. (20 year time jump!?) There's supposed to be six volumes in all. Three are out, so we'll see what the next three bring to the story... (how is Yu Wo able to publish three different novel series all at once!?)

I hope there'll be a happy ending...even though this story's theme is revenge.

The races of this world is different from normal fantasy worlds, with lots of emphasis on guardian spirits and such. It's a very rich world!

Randomly, LSK cards from the Thai edition? I laughed hard at how Sun only has 20 strength. His biggest advantage is his health points. XD; Neo's strength is frightening!

Also very randomly, but I suddenly had the urge to translate my fic Bittersweet Sweetness into Chinese, haha... that's beyond my abilities though. I can translate stuff into English, but the other way around is too hard. I attempted with one paragraph and thought it turned out okay though. XD; Might be good practice for my Chinese... if I ever have time for that. XD;

"In the RPG, he becomes a talking sword."
XDDDD

"The story follows him in RL where he deals with his new manager who looks more like a female ghost and in the game where he's a talking, foul-mouthed sword helping a girl meet her prince."
Awwwww.

" He is a male flower who was born to protect the Leaf, except he was born when their tree was about to die."
Awwwww.

"because when trees die, flowers always go crazy and die afterward."
:(

"but all the while, Owen's friend is searching for the culprit who wiped out the entire village."
Ooooooo.

"(20 year time jump!?)"
That's huge!

OMG THOSE CARDS!! *dies laughing*

eeeeee, Storm has the highest charm stat! *just dies as Sun seriously does have the lowest strength stat* But he does have the highest intelligence.

...Huh. Fire's strength is lower than Earth's. But eeeeee, Ice's is right below Judgement's! \o/

And - and... someone? (Adair?) only has 10 health!! And 0 luck. XDD;;;; Poor him!

And omg, ROLAND!! *continues to die laughing* Highest health, highest skill, highest strength, lowest intelligence, and both 0 charm and luck!

Well, if it's an RPG, it's okay. XDDD

"I think I quite like stories where someone has to be taught from scratch, or where someone doesn't exactly fit in but tries to learn how."
♥_______♥ Yesssssss. Same here.

I'm really interested how Cloud and Storm have high intelligence stats (makes sense, Cloud reads and Storm investigates) and how Hell is really good! :O He's got higher strength than Ice, higher skill than Judgement, is second in intelligence in the cold faction, and is the most charming! @_______@ I mean, wow.

Ice's fighting style is passive and defensive, isn't it? *checks* Earth has the highest health, apart from Sun. But not by much. Storm follows him. huh.

Wait, it can't be holy power, because Roland shouldn't be able to cast or use it.

asldkfja I wanna know why Metal and Moon have really low luck stats!

"That someone is Roland's human form."
Ah! :O

"Adair has never been drawn on any of the covers before."
:( Awwwwwwwwwwww

"and then blood would get into its eyes... D:"
D: D:!

"This reminds me I should try to plot out the rest of Ikatchi's story if I want to continue with that for NaNo this year..."
Eeeeeeeeeeeee!

"Does not bode well for NaNo."
Hm. Maybe a small time-skip, and then you can fill in the blank later? Or switch to Tekatme? Or how's Rykatu's mum reacting?

"Or maybe this just means he should have been in the good, warm faction. XD;"
Haha, if the hp was based on who should be in what faction, Sun would have the lowest! XDD

"It is much sadness!! But at least we'll get to see the manhua version of him..."
But it does explain why DeathLord!Roland was on top of his shoulders. I think you've already told me this. Hm. XD;;;

"Does Adair's appearance in the novel even get described? D:"
*thinks* D: I don't think he does!
