Dragon Soul *___*

My copy of Dragon Soul came yesterday, along with some other stuff I ordered (sock garters for my cosplay and a cute Locke, Celes, and Terra from this person). I ordered the book on the 9th because I totally forgot about the release date until I saw the exited, flailing posts in [livejournal.com profile] thremedon about it...even though I had been anticipating the book all year. I couldn't believe how fast shipping was when I chose super saver shipping. It only took two days!

I immediately began to read and would have continued reading if I hadn't had to visit relatives. When I came back, I picked up where I left off and read until 6 AM. I was going to make some post saying how I was going to drop off the internet for the weekend to read, but I already finished the book.

I was grinning almost throughout the whole novel. I love Thom so much. ♥ In the first novel, Havemercy, I could not stop myself from likening Thom and Rook to Yagyuu and Niou, hahaha. (I must have read one too many fic and doujinshi where Yagyuu and Niou are in such situations where Yagyuu, the more scholarly one, tries to figure Niou out, where Niou is quite the charismatic bastard). It was like I had found a book version of Yagyuu. My impression of Thom in this book is much different though, but OMG, how I adored him.

For those of you who haven't read Havemercy before, there are three books in the universe so far. I always mention that there are metal dragons and gay magicians when I introduce the book. XD; The characters' voices are captivating and so very vivid. Each novel has four main protagonists through which we experience the story. Their knowledge of happenings is limited, which can be pretty fascinating when things come together. It's like fitting the pieces of a puzzle together. :3 The plot isn't the best paced, but I'm really there for the characters and the universe they live in.

So, Dragon Soul.

Thom. ♥ I have to admit I was reading this book all for him, so this book was very awesome for me because we got so much of him as well as so much of Rook's thoughts on him. The other characters were very fascinating too though. I liked all of the characters! Madoka and Badger were funny together. Badger...since he's Ke Han, which is Japanese influenced, and his name means "Badger" in Japanese, I guess that would make him either Anaguma or Mujina. But both look fairly weird for names, haha. But then, he's only known as the Wild Badger, so that isn't even his name, is it? Malahide was pretty cool...I liked her disguises and such. My opinion of her was quite different from Madoka's. It was strange reading about her from the other POVs. They all had such different impressions of her.

So, back to Thom. In Havemercy, I felt Thom stood up for himself pretty well considering the situation he was in, but wow, he felt so much younger and unsure of himself to me here. It must have been a combination of not knowing how to deal with having a brother again, not knowing how to make himself useful, and not knowing how the heck to survive outside of the city. Poor Thom had so much trouble with his camel Bessie, but at least he got to eat a lot. XD; I'm with Rook here...just how does Thom eat so much??

I loved the opening sentence of this book by Thom, and how he sort of talked it out with Rook about not remembering the past in the end. Very nice closure for the brothers. <3 Gotta love how Rook kept thinking that he couldn't leave Thom to his own antics. This whole book was like a detour for them, haha, since they were on their way to Eklesias before this, and now they're still on their way there, except Rook has put down a part of his past, and they're on better terms with each other now. I'm very glad Thom and Rook were two of the POVs...I can very well imagine how Kalim could have been one of the POVs instead. XD; That would have been pretty fascinating too, but I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on either Thom or Rook's thoughts!

I was trying to find some particularly poignant parts that tugged at me to quote so that I could revisit them later, but I found myself rereading huge chunks of the book instead. Maybe when I reread the book. XDD I feel like rereading Havemercy now and comparing Thom and Rook's interaction there to how they interact now...

Now I'm dying for more of Thom. :'D I should try my hand at writing him.
