Shion no Ou volume 8
...my internet died a few hours ago. and got my Trickster online character killed. I'm glad I already logged out of Maple Story, since if my MS character had died, that would have hurt more. I only logged in to MS check out the cash shop stuff. I got some free Nexon cash from AX...I wish I had grabbed more. *wants blue hair and the 2x experience stuff*
Anyway, my internet died, so I ended up reading the last volume of Shion no Ou that I bought before going to AX. The anime ending's pretty close to the manga ending actually, with some differences here and there.
...I have a bad memory, so I may be remembering things wrongly. Here goes. These aren't all differences between the anime and manga...some are highlights and stuff I'm wondering about. This actually turned out more like a long summary.
- When the nurse tells Kamizono-sensei that the police asked to call them if Satoru appears, Kamizono rips up the paper with the police's contact number. I don't remember if this scene was in the anime. Kamizono comes across as much...kinder in the manga.
- Hani-meijin tells the police that Ayumi stole a 30 million yen check from him (when in actuality, Hani-meijin gave it to Ayumi). The police are outside of Hani's apartment to capture Ayumi, but Ayumi exits the place while crossdressing because of Satoru's request for him to betray Hani-meijin. Ayumi doesn't know about the police...so his decision to crossdress was lucky for him. Nikaido defends 'Saito-kun,' saying that he's not one to steal. Ayumi learns about the accusation from Nikaido.
- Yokoyama-keiji meets with Satoru at the inn, and they figure out a lot of stuff together. Yokoyama suspected that the murderer was a shougi player 8 years ago, but his superiors didn't allow him to check the half fingerprint against the fingerprints of professional shougi players. Satoru asks them to check the fingerprint against the fingerprints on the shougi pieces that were used in the match 8 years ago with Kamizono.
- The pendant wasn't Hani-meijin's pendant. It was Kazumi's pendant, which Satoru gave her. Hani-meijin purposely left the pendant to cast the blame on Kazumi. Shion didn't bring the pendant with her to the match. She was already wearing the star from Ayumi, so there's no cool ripping-the-necklace-off scene in the manga. Shion starts wearing the pendant again in memory of Kazumi after the match. In the end, she leaves it at Kazumi's grave. Satoru started noticing Shion after seeing her wear the pendant in one of the photos in the newspaper.
- Hani-meijin has a habit of leaving the empty shougi boxes on his right when he should put it under the shougi board to keep it out of the way. From the anime, I got the impression that he left the box out messily, but the impression in the manga was that he just didn't put it away.
- Kazumi wanted to meet Satoru's family, so Satoru arranged for them to have lunch together (after years of separation from his brother). Kazumi talks about a young girl she knows who's really good at shougi, hoping to bring the two brothers closer together.
- Yasuoka papa sees something concerning in Shion's play, so he goes to watch her match.
- Satoru, Yokoyama, and the other police guy Takakawa meet Ayumi at the association. Yokoyama tells Ayumi that they're not there about the 30 million yen business. Ayumi immediately changes out of his female gear, and the police guy is shocked (he was just telling Ayumi how much of a fan he was). The next panel shows Ayumi with a blush, and the police guy is entirely red. XD;;
- Satoru opens a password protected folder on Hani-meijin's computer. The password was the next move in the game they never finished. The folder had files on Shion, one of which was a video that Kazumi took.
- Satoru deduces that Hani-meijin's motive was to get Shion to play shougi. The police guy says that it's not a convincing motive. Satoru replies that there is never a motive that is convincing/understandable enough to warrant killing someone.
- After learning that Hani-meijin was the killer, Ayumi rushes out of the room.
- Kazumi was at the scene of the murder. Her guilt of introducing Hani-meijin to Shion was too overwhelming for her, causing her heart attack the day after.
- Shion is so engrossed in the match that she doesn't hear Ayumi when he yells for her to stop playing. Hani-meijin is proud of her eyes.
- Shion realizes in the middle of the match that Hani-meijin was the killer. She noticed from his hands after he played a move.
- Ayumi meets Yasuoka papa in the hallway, explains his situation, and tells Yasuoka that Hani-meijin's the killer. Yasuoka worriedly asks if Shion is playing while knowing this. Ayumi does not know if Shion knows. Yasuoka tells Ayumi to help Shion. A pupil of Kamizono would never give up here.
- Shion remembers all the happy memories she has with the people around her. She thinks to herself that she's not alone. She's different from Hani-meijin. She plays the decisive move while thinking that.
- Kamizono is proud of Shion. The nurse asks if she's his granddaughter. Kamizono remarks that if she gets together with Ayumi, then that's what it'll feel like. Kamizono asks the nurse if he can get well enough to play shougi again.
- Hani-meijin resigns and tells Shion that she doesn't need other people. He made Ayumi his student in order to separate them. He says that he'll steal everything from her. Shion slaps him.
- Satoru hires a lawyer for his brother, saying that he'll see things to the end.
The anime stops after his arrest, but the manga has another chapter that wraps things up.
- Kamizono and Ayumi are playing a match, in which Kamizono remarks that Ayumi has grown stronger. Ayumi is now a student of Yasuoka.
- Kamizono drinks something (turns out to be milk) and gets Ayumi all worried. Kamizono says milk is good for the body and pours Ayumi some. (this is such a cute scene)
- Shion brings onigiri. Kamizono teases Ayumi about Shion.
- Shion plays the next move in the match and leaves. Kamizono says that it's not a fluke that she won the tournament, though she hasn't played in a match for half a year after that. Nikaido, on the other hand, is doing well.
- Shion still can't talk, which Kamizono says is almost like a curse from Hani. Kamizono tells Ayumi to help her.
- The police guys talk about Hani. Yokoyama seems to no longer be part of the police. Hani-meijin says he killed Shion's parents because they didn't want Shion to become a shougi player. Satoru visits Hani in prison. Hani tells Satoru that he had no part in Kazumi's death and that it was Satoru's fault for not protecting her. Satoru says that it was his brother who arranged for him to be out of the country.
- Shion and Ayumi go out together and stop by the donut store. Ayumi tells Shion that it was Shion's shougi that helped him discover how fun shougi is. He starts a verbal shougi match since they don't have a board. Shion doesn't have her drawing pad with her...so she finally speaks her first words!!!! 3-四-歩. Yeah, her first words was a shougi move. Yasuoka papa and everyone else think that Shion's voice is cute.
- Shion leaves the pendant at Kazumi's grave.
- The manga ends with Shion going to the association for a match with Nikaido.
I liked how Shion's first words was a shougi move...it's a lot less abrupt then how she suddenly started speaking in the anime. Kamizono is a lot nicer in the manga. I like his relationship with Ayumi. I'm gleeful that Ayumi still crossdressed in the last volume too. XD The anime felt more dramatic though. The moonlight scene was quite chilling there. Hani's motive in both weren't convincing, like what the police mentioned. I also wondered why Hani, after evading the police for so long, suddenly started giving himself away. I guess he was just too gleeful at Shion's development. =/
Fufufu, Trading Academy just released the Shion no Ou deck too. What timing! XD
