Part 6

Leaf

As a kid, his captain did not seem to have any bad habits (namely, habits that would cause him to spend more money than he had). As a kid, his captain was just as sweet as his appearance suggested, and he truly saw the best in everyone.

Even when his vice-captain was being stingy, which was pretty much all the time. You really couldn't blame Vice-Captain Leaf, as his ducat-pinching ways had come about because of his captain, and it was pretty much the only reason the Leaf Knight Platoon still had any money left to function.

"Wow, you're so talented!" his captain praised. The little boy who was actually his captain but a lot smaller was watching him in fascination that really wasn't warranted.

All Vice-Captain Leaf had done was stitch one of the garments his captain had chosen back together. The seams were fraying, but his captain wanted to pick that garment no matter what. Vice-Captain Leaf certainly wasn't going to go out of his way to buy any new garments for his captain during this short time he would stay a kid. This current shirt had to last. The Leaf Knight Platoon, despite their recent sales of extra arrows, weren't exactly in the best financial situation with how much his captain was still borrowing from them. Over the years, his captain's correspondence with their neighboring kingdom's princess had only increased, resulting in endless purchases of parchment and ink. He had never stopped buying seasonings either, with his tastes growing even more particular as the years passed by, leading to purchases of exotic spices that cost quite a fortune. The expenses added up, much to Vice-Captain Leaf's frustration.

(Which was why Vice-Captain Leaf was currently in heaven. Not only was his captain too young to have grown addicted to seasonings, he was also too young to have met the neighboring kingdom's princess, so his captain's two biggest expenses were both currently nothing to worry about. Heaven! Of course, Princess Ann could very well begin to worry if no correspondence came from his captain during this time, but Vice-Captain Leaf was hopeful that his captain would return to his normal age before any complications might arrive in that department.)

His captain changed into the newly stitched up garment, pleased at the result. Vice-Captain Leaf thought he had done a fine job himself. The stitches were barely visible. The garment was pretty much like new, and not a single ducat had to be spent to fix it!

Now that it was fixed, however, what was he to do with a kid in tow? Vice-Captain Leaf figured that kids liked toys and candy, but since there weren't any kids around the Holy Temple, they certainly didn't have any old toys about that they could borrow. As for candy, Vice-Captain Leaf was pretty sure it could be found around the Holy Temple, especially if he asked Knight-Captain Ice for some help, but the problem was, his captain didn't have a sweet tooth. He was completely a fan of savory foods (just look at his fanatical love of seasonings!) and Vice-Captain Leaf most definitely did not want to go down that dark path of re-introducing his small captain to seasonings. Oh no. Most definitely no. If he could curb his captain's fanaticism, perhaps the leaf knights could all come out of this sticky situation with heavier pockets, no longer having to cry over handing over every single ducat from their latest earnings to make sure their captain wouldn't starve.

Mind made up, Vice-Captain Leaf got right to work.

"Wow, you're so skilled!" his captain marveled. The little boy was so intrigued that he scooted closer to have a better view. This was really nothing to make a big deal out of.

All Vice-Captain Leaf had done was take a piece of old parchment and fold it into a horse. He had to entertain his captain somehow, but it wasn't like he had toys on hand, and he certainly wasn't going to go out of his way to buy any when his captain wasn't going to stay a kid for long anyway. It wasn't that he wanted to brag, but he was quite skilled at the art of folding. It was no big deal. So he folded a horse and then a rider for the horse to entertain his captain. There, toys for his captain that didn't cost a single ducat, just some random parchment they already had around.

His captain looked up at him with shining eyes full of adoration. "Can you show me how to make that?"

Vice-Captain Leaf shivered at getting pinned by those shining eyes full of adoration, and he was taken aback by the question, having not considered that he would get asked to teach his kid captain how to fold paper horses and men. He had thought the kid would occupy himself with playing with the folded papers and leave him alone. But though Vice-Captain Leaf was an expert at saying no, a skill he had to learn to make sure his captain didn't get swindled, this time, he didn't feel a need to. He had plenty of discarded papers he had saved from letters that his captain had messed up on. Teaching his captain how to fold paper horses and men wouldn't cost a single ducat either. A perfect past time!

With that thought in mind, Vice-Captain Leaf brought over the parchment and began showing his captain how to fold the papers. His captain gasped in amazement and clamored to be taught more. Though his captain was currently a young kid, he easily picked up the craft only after a few folding mistakes, and soon they were making all sorts of paper miniatures, from swords to shields to horses to a parade of people.

"You're so nice!" his captain said, beaming at him with an entire array of paper men in front of him. All Vice-Captain Leaf had done was teach him how to fold papers from discarded ones, an inexpensive past time. Vice-Captain Leaf never paused in his folding even as he looked over his captain, taking in his beaming face and sparkling eyes. All the praise was making Vice-Captain Leaf shiver, even when he knew his captain meant it from the heart. But since when was the last time he had heard someone call him "nice?" His captain was truly too trusting, especially at this young age. That would just not do.

His captain folded one last person and handed it over to him with a big smile. "For you!

He looked at the paper man in his hand, which he figured was meant to represent him. If anyone else were in this situation, their heart would be melting right now over this super sweet gesture, but for Vice-Captain Leaf, this particular sweet gesture gave him a sense of dread. Though he enjoyed the reprieve from his captain's bad spending habits, if his captain were to remain a kid for an extended period of time, he would certainly be in grave danger because of how overly sweet he was. If he could even call someone like Vice-Captain Leaf "nice," there was no telling what could happen to his captain outside of his watch.

Vice-Captain Leaf shuddered at the thought and couldn't believe it when he began wishing for his captain to return to his normal age, terrible spending habits and all. At least, he knew his captain was quite capable of taking care of himself as an adult, thoughtfully gifting "straw" dolls with double meanings instead going full on saccharine with cute paper men. He was just a hopeless case in the money aspect. That was what Vice-Captain Leaf was around for anyway.

Then, when several days passed by and more and more perfumed letters piled up without a response from his captain, as he was still stuck as a kid, Vice-Captain Leaf found himself wishing even harder that his captain would return to his normal age already! At this rate, Vice-Captain Leaf would have to make up some random letter in response to his captain's sweetheart, or he'd have to have his toddler of a captain take to the pen. Either option was not something he wanted!
